The encoders also can withstand this high magnetic environment without loss of accuracy or resolution and are mechanically stable. Non-magnetic encoders are commonly found in MRI machines, as well as in the semiconductor and microscopy fields. <a

With loose mounting tolerances of the scanning unit in relation to the 20 micron scale, and three configurations of mounting the scanning unit, the LIK series provides excellent motion feedback for high magnetic environments.

The RIK rotary series is a kit-style bearingless rotary encoder including a disk with various diameters and line counts, and non-magnetic scanning units to match those diameters. The various sized aluminum disks containing a 20 micron graduation are epoxied to the customer’s hub design. NUMERIK JENA can also adhere the disks to custom hub designs at the factory with exact specifications and lowest runout errors.

Both encoder systems use the Epiflex Adjustment Tool to enhance the signal margin during installation on the machine. Long cable extensions are also possible for high magnetic field environments.

For more information, visit www.baumer.com) has unveiled its small absolute encoder series MHAD, which seamlessly combines the functional capabilities of an absolute encoder with the product benefits of narrow dimensions.

With a very compact design, the encoder measures only 50 mm in diameter and 20 mm deep. This makes the encoder easy to fit into tight areas where installation space is limited. In addition, its large through-hollow shaft eliminates the need for additional space at the shaft end, while enabling installation anywhere on the motor shaft.

The new series completes the company’s HDmag encoder portfolio, which excels through absolute reliability, non-contact magnetic sensing and maximum availability. MHAD absolute encoder unites high-precision incremental and absolute signals in a single device. Its additional incremental signal of up to 8192 steps per turn offers speed feedback while its current position will be output as absolute value with 16-bit resolution. The air gap and the large permissible tolerances on axial and radial tolerances allow for quick and safe installation of the encoder. Its LED serves as an installation aide as well as an activity indicator.

www.balluff.com) has announced that its latest S2E Rotary BML rotary encoder offers a new level of positional information, making it suitable for applications such as speed control, conveyors and angle measurement. Easy to set up and accurate, this rugged rotary encoder comes at a lower cost and is provides more effective improvement on traditional rotary encoder designs.

The S2E’s basic design consists of a non-contact sensor head and a magnetically-encoded ring — an assembly that can easily installed by users. Offering a quadrature output of up to 46,000 pulses per revolution, the assembly features a mounting hub that enables the magnetic ring to be adapted to various applications.

Balluf’s S2E provides a PLC the position information required for most conveyor-based manufacturing operational functions like multiple station error proofing with single station rejection. The position information provided by the new rotary encoder can also be utilized by the main programmable logic controller to develop programmable cams that are software driven.

<a

The S2E, for instance, can be fitted on a miter saw’s spindle. An output signal can be transmitted to a digital display to provide the operator an accurate visual representation of the saw blade’s angular position.

The S2E also offers accurate monitoring and control of any rotating shaft, including a motor or any rotating equipment. Thus, rotational positions of solar reflectors can be monitored easily by the S2E, with its index pulse utilized to set home position.

Balluf’s new rotary encoder is IP67 rated, which implies that it can withstand outdoor environments.

Incremental encoders, like absolute encoders, are used to track motion as well as to determine speed and position. Incremental encoders generally supply square-wave signals in two channels, A and B, which are offset by 90 degrees, or out-of-phase by 90 degrees. This helps in determining the direction of rotation.

The output signals of an incremental encoder only have information on relative position not absolute position like an absolute encoder. In order for the encoder to provide any useful position information, the position of the encoder has to be referenced in some way, traditionally using an index pulse. So the incremental encoder sends incremental position changes to electronic circuits that perform the counting function.

On start-up, the encoder will home in on a known, fixed position, which serves as a fixed reference point going forward. This fixed position can be either fixed by a magnetic point or strip of mechanically by a limit switch.

One traditional limitation of an incremental encoder is that the number of pulses counted is stored in an external or buffer counter which can be lost if there is an interruption of power. For instance, if a machine with an encoder is turned off, the encoder will not know its position when switched on again. The encoder has to perform a homing routing in order to know its exact position, forcing the motor to move until a home limit switch is activated. Then, a counter or buffer will be zeroed and the system will determine where it is relative to fixed positional points. One way around this issue of loss of power is to use a battery backup system. Such a solution ensures that the memory is backed up and can store the count information and provide an absolute count once power is restored.

Standard Quadrature A and B signals used in incremental encoders are shown in the graph above. Electronic circuitry interprets the raw data to determine position as well as the direction of rotation.

Motion Control Tips

Encoders can be either absolute or incremental. Absolute encoders have a unique code for each shaft position. Or in other words, every position of an absolute encoder is distinctive. The absolute encoder interprets a system of coded tracks to create position information where no two positions are identical. Another feature is that absolute encoders do not lose position whenever power is switched off. Since each position is distinctive, the verification of true position is available as soon as power is switched on. It is not important to initialize the system by going back to a home base for a reference.

Absolute encoders can be either single-turn or multi-turn. Single-turn encoders are well suited to short travel motion control applications where position verification is needed within a single turn of the encoder shaft. Multi-turn encoders, on the other hand, are better for applications that involve complex or lengthy positioning requirements.

Absolute encoders have a number of advantages. First is the non-volatility of memory. An absolute encoder works as a non-volatile position verification device. True position is not lost if power is lost or the system moves while power is switched off. A continuous reading of position is not needed. This is specifically useful in those applications, such as satellite-tracking antennas, where position verification is key.

Absolute encoders also provide programming flexibility. By removing the need for system homing, the encoders can be controlled to give positioning programs based on setting up reference from point-to-point, rather than from a home position. Additionally, a microprocessor interface module allows for programming various operating parameters, such as resolution.

Safety is another benefit. In some applications where a loss of position could lead to operator injury or machine damage, an absolute encoder automatically provides position verification when the power is switched on.

Absolute encoders also have good immunity to electrical noise. The device determines position by frequently reading a coded signal. Stray pulses from electrical noise will not build up and accurate position is presented again on the next reading.

www.posital.com) has announced that its Magnetocode (MCD) absolute rotary encoders now features a new hollow-shaft variant of the MCD encoder, making the devices easier to mount on shafts up to 20 mm in diameter.

Featuring excellent accuracy, adaptability and reliability, the new devices are offered with digital or analog electrical interfaces. With measurement technology based on a Hall-effect sensor and a rotating magnet, the analog models make a great alternative for traditional potentiometers as it provides superior longevity, reliability and accuracy.

Unlike potentiometers, these new encoders do not run the risk of losing accuracy due to surface contamination or wear since there is no contact among its components. The encoders also offer flexible range-setting feature that allows the installer to “teach” the device the potential mechanical motion’s limits during operations. When the limits have been established, the device will instantly self-calibrate to enable the full range of electrical output to exactly match the mechanical movement’s full range.

This results to a remarkable improvement on the control system’s overall accuracy. To simplify the setup, the analog-output models also provide LEDs and buttons on its casing.

<a

These tough MCD encoders feature heavy-duty enclosures to protect the measurement components from dust, shock and vibration, as well as mechanical loads and moisture (up to IP 69K ratings). The hollow-shaft models also feature permanently lubricated brass and steel gear-set for a trouble-free and long service life.

www.siko.de) has proudly announced the release of a new rotary encoder that adapts to the application and not vice versa — the AH36M rotary encoder. With this principle, the company has taken a new direction in the rotary encoder segment, and has incorporated a magnetic analog absolute encoder that features a “teach-in-function” to the range.

The new AH36M rotary encoder comes with two external inputs that allow it to be set to the preferred measurement range in just a few simple steps. This provides users the complete signal amplitude (from 0 to 10 V or four to 20 mA) across the exact measurement range that the user has selected. Whether the user wants to measure two, 10 or 100 revolutions, this new rotary encoder provides the best solution for the job, as it eliminates the need to stock encoders with various measurement ranges or gear ratios.

Using battery-free multi turn and non-wearing technology, the cost-effective rotary encoder completes the chosen measurement range in 4096 steps or 12 bits. Specifically designed for high loads, the AH36M rotary encoder features twin ball bearings.

<img

Measuring 36.5 mm in diameter, the rotary encoder’s compact construction makes it ideally suited for use in applications with limited space. Although it comes in a compact design, the new AH36M rotary encoder still features a six mm hollow shaft.

<a

The customized tape can be easily buckled onto the drive or generator shaft, just like a belt. With the help of the welded fastener, the tape is tightened on the shaft and can be quickly exchanged when required. The narrow read-head incorporates an integrated dual sensor head that is mounted to a frame over the flexible tape. This takes up minimal space on the shaft and operates without interruption over the fastening gap in the tape ends, and has no effect on the encoder output signal.

The unit can be installed and removed repeatedly without affecting performance, and offers wear-free speed and position feedback with a nearly unlimited service life.

For uninterrupted sensing across the fastening gap, the flexible magnetic tape encoder features an integrated dual sensor head and a signal processing unit (patent pending). The large permissible tolerances on axial displacement (+/- 5 mm) and air gap (up to 3 mm) ease alignment of the sensor head and also ensure reliable detection unaffected by mechanical backlash and vibrations. The fully encapsulated electronics integrated in the sensor head are protected against soiling, shocks and vibrations. The integrated FPGA-based signal processing allows for high angular resolutions, better than 0.003°, more than 100,000 ppr, and will remain unaffected by thermal shaft expansion.

For more information on Baumer’s HDMag line, visit www.posital.com) has announced that its Optocode (OCD) absolute rotary encoders now come with a new combined interface that allows simultaneous communication of both incremental and absolute position data. The company’s new interface is specifically developed to deliver cost effective and robust point-to-point communications between various kinds of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and encoders.

Utilizing the synchronous serial interface (SSI) standard, the new interface relays absolute rotary position information to the PLC. While the shaft is rotating at a maximum speed of 16,384 pulses per rotation, the encoder also sends a series of electronic pulses. An optional index pulse can also be transmitted once every complete rotation.

Meanwhile, the incremental pulses can be transmitted via a push/pull connection or over an RS-422/485 link. Responding to a request from the controller, the dual-personality encoders offer access to absolute rotary position information while accurately measuring the rotational velocity in real-time and making it suitable for monitoring rotating machinery or for motor control applications.

These encoders also offers other new features such as optimized diagnostic reporting through the SSI connection or through case-mounted LED’s, and an optional case-mounted push-button that enables the operator to re-set the absolute position readout’s zero-position (datum).

<a

Available in hollow, solid and hub shaft variants, the units can be supplied with a cable exit or a connector.

<a

A true absolute encoder, Resolute automatically determines absolute position upon switching on, effectively eliminating the need for reference returns or battery backup.

The new absolute encoder utilizes a detection method that is similar to an ultra-high-speed digital camera reading from a fine-pitch, non-repeating barcode scale.

Users can easily capture images, analyze and interpolate them to fine resolutions of up to one nm, even when operating at a maximum speed of 100 m/sec.

With immunity from contamination, this technique achieves broader setup and running tolerances attributed to the absolute encoder’s dirt-rejection and cross-checking capability.

Renishaw guarantees safety since the absolute encoder has been integrated with separate checking algorithm, which regularly monitors position and ensures problems are flagged up before reaching the controller.

To provide users with remarkably higher-fidelity encoder feedback, Resolute offers a harmonious mixture of scale technology and high-performance redhead.

With Sub-Divisional Error (SDE) controlled to within +/-40 nm, the dynamic response of the absolute encoder is optimized. As standard on RELA Invar scales, Resolute offers overall accuracy that is better than +/-1 um, while high accuracy at lengths up to five m is offered on RSLA stainless-steel scales.

RTLA-S and RTLA rugged steel tape scales, which offer +/-5 um/m accuracy, quicker and easier installation as well as lengths up to 10 m, are also available.

www.sick.com), a German encoder manufacturer, has unveiled a new digital interface technology that simplifies servomotor connection — the Hiperface DSL (digital servo link) encoder interface.

<a

Motors now require a single connector only, which significantly reduces costs and cabling time.

For safe speed and position functions, the Hiperface DSL encoder interface has been specifically designed to be the only interface that supports encoders to SIL3 levels.

Using two or four wires within a motor’s power cable, digital sensor data can be transmitted on a maximum distance of 100 m. Although commonly used for motor winding temperature sensors, the twisted-wire pair wires can now be utilized for digital communications. Encoders compatible with the new protocol are provided with an optional input which digitize temperature signals and transmit them directly to the drive containing the encoder data.

Standard cables can be used when transmitting data at a distance of up to 20 m. For longer distances, the cables must conform to specified impedance criteria.

Offering a transmission rate of 9.216 Mbd, the new interface conforms with RS-485 criteria. It transmits data in a short span of 12.15 μs, or five times faster than the fastest drives.

“The combination of improved speed regulation and functionality with greater operator safety, and at a reduced cost, marks a significant step forward,” said Darren Pratt, encoder specialist at Sick UK.

“Hiperface DSL is set to be the new standard for high- to low-performance applications.”

The new encoders can also be used to log speed, temperature and rotation data for maintenance purposes. Hiperface DSL can also include other sensor information — such as vibration, acceleration and torque — to offer optimized dynamic control.

<a

It needs an external interpolation device for motion feedback applications that requires high-resolution measurement.

Meanwhile, the AEDR-850x reflective encoder has integrated the three channels, photodetecting and interpolator circuitry and an LED light source in a single compact package with a 3.95 mm x 3.40 mm footprint. The encoder delivers high resolution encoding of 304 lines per inch. Its highly-integrated modules allow a new level of miniaturization for applications where space and size are the primary concerns.

“The integrated third-channel, compact size and high-resolution encoding performance of the Avago AEDR-850x modules is truly revolutionary, enabling smaller motor encoding systems than ever before possible,” said Hassan Hussain, General Manager at Avago’s Motion Control Products Division.

“These innovative modules cut design costs and save PCB board space for our customers, and expand the reach of our reflective encoder offerings into the industrial automation and medical segments.”

Aside from providing interpolation of up to 4x, the AEDR-850x encoders also enable several resolution designs by altering the codewheel size. Unlike some devices with Hall Effect, the optical-based modules of the encoders are less susceptible to EMI. Offering a fixed operating temperature range of -20°C to 85°C, the robust encoders are ideal for industrial and commercial operation environments.

<a

For excellent position feedback in critical applications such as analysis devices, medical equipment and robotics, the 64-line incremental magnetic encoder must be used together with the Haydon can stack linear actuator.

The quadrature encoder system uses a high energy neodymium magnet and offers an eight bit digital resolution that results to a total output of 256 pulses per revolution. For every complete shaft rotation, the encoder delivers a 90 degree phase shifted A/B output channels together with one index pulse. At an angular position, the encoder circuitry delivers 10,000 samples per second.

The 256 pulse incremental magnetic encoder is virtually immune to shock, vibration, contaminants and dust. It is also a great alternative for optical encoders. It can be operated using either a 5V or 3.3V input voltage. It produces a compact, robust linear motion package when combines with Haydon 25000 series linear actuator.

The Haydon 25000 Series’ performance is “second to none” compared to actuators of the same size. Improvements include custom engineered polymers, high energy neodymium magnets, optimized stator tooth geometry, and larger ball bearings for better rotor support and axial loading.

<a

Think of the readhead as an ultra-fast miniature digital camera, taking photos of a scale that consists of a long, non-repeating bar code. RESOLUTE analyzes these photos to determine position with extremely low noise (jitter) and SDE (Sub-Divisional Error). This increases encoder feedback fidelity and ensures smoother velocity control and positional stability.

Using a unique single-track optical scale, RESOLUTE acquires absolute position immediately upon switch-on, without battery back-up, simplifying machine design by completely eliminating the need for reference returns. The system’s ruggedness, ultra-high speed capability and exceptional resolution make it ideal for high-performance lathes, as well as slower-moving axes requiring the highest levels of precision and motion control integrity.

To learn more, visit:

<a

If all the mounting tolerances are met, the encoder requires virtually no maintenance outside of contamination protection.

The ECI 119 uses HEIDENHAIN’s EnDat serial data interface. Two types of output are offered: purely serial data (EnDat21) or serial data with 1 Vpp incremental signals (EnDat 01). The SSI interface can also be implemented, but requires a minimum value order. Not only does EnDat allow the user to transfer incremental and absolute position data, it also enables online diagnostics.

A new version of the Adjusting and Testing Software is available with the ECI 119. This software allows diagnostic checks of the encoder position signals. And the new ExI Mounting Wizard allows the scanning gap and signal amplitude to be checked in order to assess mounting quality.

<a

Rugged, accurate, and easy to set up, Balluff’s rotary encoder is a lower cost, more effective improvement on standard rotary encoder designs. The basic design of the S2E consists of a magnetically-encoded ring and a non-contact sensor head. This assembly installs easily and provides a quadrature output at up to 46,000 pulses per revolution. An available mounting hub allows its magnet ring to be adapted to a wide range of applications.

The S2E gives a PLC the position information necessary for virtually all conveyor-based manufacturing operational functions such as multiple station error proofing with single station rejection. It also provides conveyor speed control monitoring. Position information provided by the S2E can also be used by the central PLC to develop software driven programmable cams.

Angle Control and Adjustment
The S2E provides accurate angle measurement for any apparatus that revolves around a shaft. For example, the S2E can be mounted on the spindle of a miter saw. An output signal can be sent to a digital display to give the operator an accurate visual indication of the angular position of the saw blade.

Speed Control and Monitoring
The S2E provides accurate control and monitoring of any rotating shaft such as a motor or any rotating equipment. For example, rotational positions of solar reflectors can easily be monitored by the S2E. An index pulse can be used to set home position (due East, for example). Balluff’s rotary encoder has an IP67 rating, which means it can easily withstand outdoor environments.

Balluff<br

Named the MSR 40, this unique and versatile encoder is available in North America through HEIDENHAIN Corporation. Applications for this economical ring encoder include rotary tables, telescopes and medical instrumentation.

The steel tape of the MSR 40 utilizes the proven Single-Field Scanning principle with 200µm grating pitch – offering ease of mounting with high achievable angular resolution. Accuracy of the system is ±30 µm/m with an operating temperature of 0 C to +50 C. With these specifications, this encoder is distinguished by its successful operation at high speeds, especially noteworthy for large measurement applications.

The novelty of the MSR 40 encoder is that it links the ends of the steel tape together with one of two joining mechanisms, depending upon the application. Measurement through a full 360° is thus possible. The MOR version uses a steel ring tensioning cleat for encoders mounted to a steel surface thus allowing for thermal expansion; the MER version uses a rubber gasket with a low-profile tensioning cleat for other mounting surfaces.

Depending on the shaft diameter, line counts of up to 20,000 are available on the MSR 40. All versions offer quasi – absolute positioning via distance-coded reference marks or homing via a single reference mark. The MSR 40 is easily mountable and is available in both standard and custom sizes. Custom orders are welcomed.

RSF Elektronik
www.cui.com) unveiled the latest addition to the company’s high-resolution, low-cost AMT encoder line, the new AMT303 series. This encoder generates U/V/W commutation signals for vectoring current to brushless motors. Through the AMT303′s SPI (“Serial Peripheral Interface”), resolutions can be set. Commutation output can hold brushless motors with two, four, six, eight or 10 pole pairs, and it is also selectable through the SPI. The new AMT303 has supplementary incremental Z, B, and A channels for a variety of servo startup and positioning sequences. More options include ten bore sizes and nine mounting patterns, to create a flexible platform which can be paired with many industry standard motors.

<a

Its technology is immune to magnetic interference and environmental particulates, creating an economical, reliable and stable positioning and control solution. The new encoder consumes 10 mA at 5 V DC, making it convenient for any application.

The AMT303 encoder’s SPI affords simpler hardware and higher throughput interfacing than SMBus or I²C. The onboard PIC 16F690 MCU runs at up to 10 MHz providing for high-speed applications using a TCL code. Zero position may be achieved by ground trigger or SPI command, eliminating the need for long mechanical alignment during the mounting process. Moreover, an EEPROM can accommodate up to 128 bytes of user data. A demo board is also available for standalone demonstration, example TCL code and PC access to SPI interface.

“We believe the AMT303 series represents a breakthrough in commutation encoders,” said James Seiler, Encoder Product Manager of CUI. “Users will really be able to leverage the benefits of our ASIC-based system. When compared to optical encoders typically used in commutation applications, the AMT303 will bring a level of ruggedness and ease of use unrivaled in the industry.”

<a

Targeted for low-power battery operated applications such as robotics, the AS5055 is also well suited for other position sensing applications requiring small size and high resolution. The AS5055 integrates four Hall sensor elements, a 12-bit angle encoder, a smart power management controller and an easy-to-use 3- or 4-wire SPI communications interface.

Housed in a small 4×4 mm QFN package, the low-power encoder is the smallest device in its class. Depending on the readout rate, the current consumption is reduced to µA-levels, e.g. 50µA average at 10 measurements per second – the lowest in the industry.

Only a few passive components and a magnet rotating above the chip are necessary to assemble the encoder systems. The AS5055 performs all angle calculations as well as automatic power-up and power-down on–chip. It only draws current, when a new measurement is requested by the host controller. As soon as the acquisition of a measurement is completed, the AS5055 automatically suspends to power-down.

Josef Janisch, product marketing manager at austriamicrosystems, stated, “This is the industry’s smallest 12-bit magnetic rotary encoder available. It also offers the lowest power consumption due to automatic shutdown and wake-up modes. This is ideal for battery equipment, as it extends battery life. In addition, the industry standard SPI interface offers an easy-to-use connection to common microcontrollers.”

The AS5055 is available in a tiny 4×4 mm 16-pin QFN package, operates from a 3.3 volt power supply, and has an ambient operating temperature range of -20 to +85°C.

austriamicrosystems<br
