href="http://www.beckhoff.com/">www.beckhoff.com) has unveiled its latest power monitoring terminal developed to monitor the condition of a three-phase DC or AC mains network.

Suitable for Beckhoff EtherCAT I/O system, the EL3773 power monitoring terminal collects instantaneous values of voltage and power at a remarkably fast sampling rate of up to 10,000 samples per second. This makes the voltage and the power available to the higher-level PC controller for analysis or calculation. Transferring the input channels through oversampling leads to acquisition of actual values with a notably higher resolution, with respect to time, than the communication cycle time.

The EtherCAT Terminal system utilizes the EtherCAT distributed clocks method as its basis to achieve highly accurate acquisition of measured values. The EtherCAT devices are synchronized by the distributed clocks with very high precision. Voltage and current are measured by the EL3773 EtherCAT Terminal through the three channels in every case. Based on the EtherCAT oversampling principle, the six channels are simultaneously measured with up to 100 μs temporal resolution, before they are passed on to the controller. The channel’s maximum sampling frequency is one kHz.

<a

The company said that the fast sampling rate also allows the measurement of current peaks and voltage.

www.westermo.com) has unveiled a compact device server switch for connecting telemetry systems and legacy serial control to the latest IP networks.

The Lynx DSS replaces low data rate serial communications with higher bandwidth IP networks to preserve investments in the current system, ensure trouble free industrial communication and add functionality by supporting new equipment that demands additional bandwidth.

This industrial Ethernet switch manages application with a combination of serial and IP connections. It is powered by the latest version of Westermo WeOS operating system, allowing the device to deliver optimized serial to Ethernet connectivity, modem replacement functionality, Modbus gateways and support for dual serial networks. Legacy devices can be connected through its two serial ports, which are configured for RS-232 and for either RS-422/485 or RS-232.

Available in two models — the L108-F2G-S2 and L208-F2G-S2, the Lynx DSS offers remote, secure access to a network through its encrypted VPNs and multi-port DMZ. Aside from supporting users wanting to communicate through potentially insecure networks, these functions also help prevent users from connecting to the wrong network.

Motion Control Tips

Multi-axis motion control typically uses event-based synchronization. This level of synchronization is defined as scheduled, absolute hard delivery of time-critical cyclic data across the network. Delivery variability must be less than 1 µs, which is also known as jitter.

While a number of networks exist for “motion control,” it is important to define the time delivery needs for the given application. Synchronized multi-axis motion will have different timing needs than a divert actuator on a conveyor system.

A requirement for jitter-free motion can narrow network choices. Here is a brief synopsis of a few common networks used in motion control applications.

EtherCAT®
Ethernet for Control Automation Technology (EtherCAT) was developed by the Beckhoff company. It is fast and deterministic, and processes data using dedicated hardware and software

It uses a full duplex, master-slave configuration, and accommodates any topology. It can process 1,000 I/O points in 30 µs and communicate with 100 servo axes in 100 µs. Axes receive set values and control data and report actual position and status. A distributed clock technique that is a simple version of IEEE 1588 synchronizes the axes with less than 1 µs of jitter.

This protocol can deliver fast throughput because messages are processed in hardware before they are forwarded to the next slave. Slaves read data relevant to them as the data frame passes and they insert new data into that same data stream on the fly. This procedure does not depend on the run-time of the protocol stack, so processing delays are typically just a few nanoseconds.

EtherNet/IP (EIP)
Standard Ethernet cannot guarantee jitter of less than 1 µs because of the data layer’s use of Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) techniques to control packet transmission. To overcome this issue, ODVA developed EtherNet/IP, and it did so without changing any of the four lower layers of Ethernet.

EtherNet/IP is an industrial application layer protocol operating over the Ethernet medium and used for communication between industrial control systems and their components, such as programmable automation controllers, programmable logic controllers or I/O systems. The “IP” stands for “Industrial Protocol,” referring to Rockwell Automation’s adoption of Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™) standards as EtherNet/IP was developed.

EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion as the application layer removes the requirement for strict determinism from the network infrastructure and entrusts the end devices with the timing information necessary to handle the real-time control needs of the application. Thus, this network can deliver the high performance, deterministic control required for closed-loop drive operation using standard, unmodified Ethernet (complying with Ethernet standards, including IEEE 802.3 and TCP/IP). CIP is also used by DeviceNet and ControlNet, so these networks are interoperable.

CIP Motion accomplishes real time data transmission through the application profiles that define the technology. Those profiles allow position, speed and torque loops to be set within a drive. This protocol makes use of CIP Sync technology, the IEEE-1588 compliant Precision Clock Synchronization, which is also mapped into the CIP object model, to coordinate precise, synchronized motion control.

CIP Sync consists of a Time Sync object and associated services for synchronizing nodes to within ± 100 ns of one another. EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion allows 100 axes to be coordinated with a 1 ms network update to all axes.

Sercos
Sercos is a digital bus that interconnects motion controllers, drives, I/O, sensors and actuators for numerically controlled machines and systems. It is designed for high-speed serial communication of standard closed-loop real-time data over a noise-immune, fiber optic ring (Sercos I & II) or Industrial Ethernet cable (Sercos III).

In a Sercos interface system, all servo loops are normally closed in the drive to reduce the computational load on the motion controller and synchronize more motion axes than it otherwise could. In addition, closing all the servo loops in the drive reduces the effect of the transport delay between the motion control and drive.

Sercos III is the open, IEC-standard third-generation version that transmits data over Industrial Ethernet cabling and protocol for real-time control. It combines the best of both Ethernet and previous Sercos designs for deterministic bi-directional real time motion and I/O control. It delivers rich I/O communication capabilities while enabling all conventional protocols to be transmitted over the same Ethernet network efficiently in parallel with Sercos real-time communication.

Sercos III achieves cycle times as low as 31.25 µs. It supports up to 511 slave devices in one network, with multiple networks possible in a system.

www.siemens.com) has unveiled the latest version of the Ultramat 23 gas analyzer that features open interface architectures with Profibus PA/DP, RS 485 based protocols and ELAN supports to simplify process integration.

With paramagnetic measuring cell, the analyzer records the concentration of oxygen by combining the measuring principle of paramagnetic oxygen with the measurements of a maximum of three infrared-sensitive gases in a single unit.

Supplementing the previous version of the analyzer, which features electrochemical measuring cells instead of paramagnetic cells, the latest version of Ultramat 23 gas analyzer offers a highly sensitive measuring cell. This allows the analyzer to accurately measure low oxygen concentrations within the range of below 0.5 percent. The paramagnetic measurement can also be utilized with dry gases. Using Ultramat 23, process states can be effectively controlled and precisely measured with continued analysis of gas concentrations.

The new Siemens gas analyzer is ideally suited for applications in process controls in steel and cement industries. Moreover, combining Ultramat 23 with an H2S sensor and Ultramat 23 with a paramagnetic measuring cell is ideal for quality control during biomethane production and biogas feeding into commercial gas distribution networks.

www.jvlusa.com), a leading company in the field of integrated stepper and servo motors, has unveiled an EtherCat module equipped with M12 connectors as well as internal switch technology with Ethernet IN/OUT — the EtherCAT Industrial Ethernet Module.

Specifically developed to meet the demand of the market for a new module that features EtherCAT and EtherNet/IP, the EtherCAT Industrial Ethernet Module supplements the current modules offered by the company that includes Profibus, CANopen, NanoPLC, Devicenet, WLAN and BlueTooth.

EtherCAT, or Ethernet for Control Automation Technology, is the leading and fastest growing industrial Ethernet bus inEurope. Originally developed by Beckhoff, this technology overcomes the system limitations of various Ethernet solutions as its Ethernet frame is now processed on the fly. With the telegram sent to the next device, the slave node’s new FMMU (fieldbus memory management unit) reads the data addressed to it.

With the FMMU and DMA access to the master’s network card, the complete protocol processing is independent of the run-time of protocol stacks, software implementation or CPU performance since it now occurs within the hardware. Featuring 30 µs update time for 1,000 distributed I/Os, the new module can also exchange a maximum of 1,486 bytes of process data, which is equivalent to around 12,000 digital inputs and outputs, with a single Ethernet frame at only 300 µs.

<a

The advanced passive impedance design and especially selected components allows the FieldConnex Compact Power Hub to deliver outstanding power and performance in less space without compromise. It also supports safe fieldbus segments according to High Power Trunk concept and the Entity Ex nL or Ex ic classification.

“The power supply modules that mount on the motherboard are just 12.5 mm,” said Brian Traczyk, Product Manager at Pepperl+Fuchs. “Depending on the module the typical power loss is only 1.3 or 1.6 watts, which promises a long service life with the most efficient control room cabinet-packing density available today.”

“And because the FieldConnex Compact Power Hub is designed with built-in redundancy, two power modules are assigned to each segment. This means that exchanging a failed power module does not require any interruption of the power supply, and will not affect plan operation.”

<a

This new technology helps companies optimize their machine design flexibility, reduce overall system costs and improve their systems performance.

“This really is an important evolution in machine control; what we have done is close the loop,” said Haïthem Mansouri, European Product Manager, Motion Control, Rockwell Automation.

“By introducing motion over EtherNet/IP we have given engineers the ability to side step their reliance on specialist motion protocols, such as SERCOS. This has removed the final remaining barrier that was preventing the adoption of a complete, single, integrated network that is already capable of undertaking safety, process and discrete control.”

“EtherNet/IP is, to all intents and purposes, identical to standard Ethernet; the only change being in the Application Layer,” explained Mansouri. “It uses standard, unmodified Ethernet, and allows users to effectively manage real-time control and information flow for improved plant-wide optimization; ultimately resulting in more informed decision-making and better business performance.”

He added that although other vendors use Ethernet “but they just use the first physical layer – the actual protocol is proprietary and specialist. This means that although they can claim ‘Ethernet compatibility’, it is, in fact, just as closed as any other proprietary protocol.”

With this latest innovation, machine builders can now program, commission, configure and maintain PowerFlex 755 AC drives and Kinetix 6500 servo drives with the outstanding processing capabilities of Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 557X PACs – all over EtherNet/IP.

<a

The TRUNKSAFE Fault-Tolerant segment’s design only requires two TRUNKSAFE power conditioners, two H1 cards, one TRUNKSAFE device coupler and two cables. Users do not need to install special software at the DCS nor to duplicate the field instrument. If one of the field cables fails, the system still continues to operate via the alternative cable while the system notifies the DCS.

The TRUNKSAFE device coupler has been especially hardened to eliminate common-mode failures that might affect the whole segment.

Aside from saving money, TRUNKSAFE also prevents a hardware fault from affecting the entire segment.

TRUNKSAFE can be used on both Profibus and FOUNDATION fieldbus segments and on both non-critical and critical processes. It can be also used together with MooreHawke’s standard fieldbus power conditioner system.

<a

Available in In-Sight vision system, Cognex Connect is an extensive collection of communication capabilities that is also offered in DataMan 200 fixed-mount ID reader series.

<a

Since In-Sight and DataMan are network devices, the protocols enable the devices to be easily accessed from any terminal connected to the network. Thus, they eliminate the need for a host PC that will translate USB or RS 232 communication to a central or PLC network. Images and data files can be archived using the Cognex Connect’s FTP support. This capability allows later analysis and review of files. DataMan ID readers also allow users to customize terminal interfaces and GUI through a NET based command library. Its simple command line interface provides users control over the ID readers.

“By adding industrial protocols, the DataMan 8000 series is the first and only hand held ID reader to allow a direct connection to a PLC-acting as a node on the factory network,” Senior Vice President, International Sales and Marketing Didier Lacroix said. “DataMan readers with Cognex Connect completely eliminate the need for a PC and simplify the integration into the factory network, reducing costs and downtime.”

<a

Compared to other competitive models in the market, the LS680 provides a cutting-edge speed, which is 33 up to 50 times faster.

<a

Now, these issues can be addressed remotely with live video from the trouble spot, which saves time and makes for a more secure system.”

Its optical data transmitter enables it to transmit various industrial Ethernet topologies such as PROFINET, Ethernet IP, and TCP/IP on the same product. It can transmit signals from a distance of 0 to 150 meters, providing a threshold distance of 180 meters. LS680 advanced features allow it to consistently transmit data at a rate of 100 MBit/s through a 100 Base-TX interface.

The LS680 optical data coupler serves as a “virtual cable” replacing the physical Ethernet cable, which has inherent electrical and mechanical limitations, such as susceptibility to noise, wear and tear and inflexibility.

<a

Some of the applications for coupling with this advanced drive adapter are high-speed presses, packaging machines, injection molding machines, machine tooling (CNC), robotics, test beds, woodworking machines, high speed bottling lines (food and beverage) and materials handling / logistics.

EtherCAT is an Ethernet technology aimed at maximizing the capability of full duplex Ethernet bandwidth. It exceeds the overhead usually associated with Ethernet by using “on the fly” processing hardware. An EtherCAT bus comprises up to 65535 slave devices and a master system, linked together with standard Ethernet cabling. The incoming data are processed by the slave devices, which insert or extract them and shift the message to the next slave device, creating a loop.

Various protocols can be utilized as the application layer. ABB’s drive adapter uses the CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) technology. Customers can create a robust solution out of the combination of this data infused protocol with the company’s ACS850 and ACS355 drives. It does not only provide real time control but also the capability to extract data in order to optimize applications.

<a

An EtherCAT bus consists of a master system and up to 65535 slave devices, connected together with standard Ethernet cabling. The slave devices process the incoming data directly, extract or insert relevant data, and transfer the message to the next EtherCAT slave device, making a loop.

There are several protocols that can be used as the application layer. In the CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) technology, the CANopen protocol is applied to EtherCAT. By combining this high speed / data infused protocol with ABB’s feature enriched ACS355 and ACS850 drives, designers can develop robust solutions. This includes not only real-time control, but also the ability to extract real-time data to gain further optimization for applications.

<a

It already comes with the DataMan 200 fixed-mount ID reader series and In-Sight vision systems. The Cognex Connect allows industrial connectivity for DataMan 8000 ID readers from Cognex via EtherNet/IP support – a first for industrial handheld ID readers.

<a

As a network device, In-Sight and DataMan devices can be accessed from any terminal linked to the network. This eliminates the need for a host PC to translate USB or RS-232 communications to a programmable logic controller (PLC) or central network. The protocols allow for images and data files to be directly archived through FTP support for later analysis and review. DataMan ID readers offer a .NET based command library to customize terminal interfaces and user-specific GUIs, as well as provide control through a simple command line interface.

“By adding industrial protocols, the DataMan 8000 series is the first and only handheld ID reader to allow a direct connection to a PLC-acting as a node on the factory network,” said Carl Gerst, Cognex’s Business Unit Manager for ID Products. “DataMan readers with Cognex Connect completely eliminate the need for a PC and simplify the integration into the factory network, reducing costs and downtime.”

<a

For instance, plants are required to operate 24/7, 365 days a year with no interruption, and this must be sustained to make improvements in the production process. The causes of errors should be identified immediately, irrespective of the complexity of the actuators and sensors used. Other challenges include the large number of signals in the plant – usually number up to 100,000.

These requirements identified four main aspects that were integrated in the new profile: configuration in run; integration of existing fieldbuses; scalable redundancy; and time synchronization and time stamping.

Manufacturers can now implement these functions in their PROFINET products for process automation applications.

Important basic mechanisms underlying the “PROFINET for Process Automation’ application profile are already in the PROFINET Specification V2.3, which was released just in time for SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 in November. Aside from the new process automation-relevant specifications, the PROFINET Specification’s new version also includes specifications for high performance.

<a
