EtherCAT®
Ethernet for Control Automation Technology (EtherCAT) was developed by the Beckhoff company. It is fast and deterministic, and processes data using dedicated hardware and software

It uses a full duplex, master-slave configuration, and accommodates any topology. It can process 1,000 I/O points in 30 µs and communicate with 100 servo axes in 100 µs. Axes receive set values and control data and report actual position and status. A distributed clock technique that is a simple version of IEEE 1588 synchronizes the axes with less than 1 µs of jitter.

This protocol can deliver fast throughput because messages are processed in hardware before they are forwarded to the next slave. Slaves read data relevant to them as the data frame passes and they insert new data into that same data stream on the fly. This procedure does not depend on the run-time of the protocol stack, so processing delays are typically just a few nanoseconds.

EtherNet/IP (EIP)
Standard Ethernet cannot guarantee jitter of less than 1 µs because of the data layer’s use of Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) techniques to control packet transmission. To overcome this issue, ODVA developed EtherNet/IP, and it did so without changing any of the four lower layers of Ethernet.

EtherNet/IP is an industrial application layer protocol operating over the Ethernet medium and used for communication between industrial control systems and their components, such as programmable automation controllers, programmable logic controllers or I/O systems. The “IP” stands for “Industrial Protocol,” referring to Rockwell Automation’s adoption of Common Industrial Protocol (CIP™) standards as EtherNet/IP was developed.

EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion as the application layer removes the requirement for strict determinism from the network infrastructure and entrusts the end devices with the timing information necessary to handle the real-time control needs of the application. Thus, this network can deliver the high performance, deterministic control required for closed-loop drive operation using standard, unmodified Ethernet (complying with Ethernet standards, including IEEE 802.3 and TCP/IP). CIP is also used by DeviceNet and ControlNet, so these networks are interoperable.

CIP Motion accomplishes real time data transmission through the application profiles that define the technology. Those profiles allow position, speed and torque loops to be set within a drive. This protocol makes use of CIP Sync technology, the IEEE-1588 compliant Precision Clock Synchronization, which is also mapped into the CIP object model, to coordinate precise, synchronized motion control.

CIP Sync consists of a Time Sync object and associated services for synchronizing nodes to within ± 100 ns of one another. EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion allows 100 axes to be coordinated with a 1 ms network update to all axes.

Sercos
Sercos is a digital bus that interconnects motion controllers, drives, I/O, sensors and actuators for numerically controlled machines and systems. It is designed for high-speed serial communication of standard closed-loop real-time data over a noise-immune, fiber optic ring (Sercos I & II) or Industrial Ethernet cable (Sercos III).

In a Sercos interface system, all servo loops are normally closed in the drive to reduce the computational load on the motion controller and synchronize more motion axes than it otherwise could. In addition, closing all the servo loops in the drive reduces the effect of the transport delay between the motion control and drive.

Sercos III is the open, IEC-standard third-generation version that transmits data over Industrial Ethernet cabling and protocol for real-time control. It combines the best of both Ethernet and previous Sercos designs for deterministic bi-directional real time motion and I/O control. It delivers rich I/O communication capabilities while enabling all conventional protocols to be transmitted over the same Ethernet network efficiently in parallel with Sercos real-time communication.

Sercos III achieves cycle times as low as 31.25 µs. It supports up to 511 slave devices in one network, with multiple networks possible in a system.

With paramagnetic measuring cell, the analyzer records the concentration of oxygen by combining the measuring principle of paramagnetic oxygen with the measurements of a maximum of three infrared-sensitive gases in a single unit.

Featuring 30 µs update time for 1,000 distributed I/Os, the new module can also exchange a maximum of 1,486 bytes of process data, which is equivalent to around 12,000 digital inputs and outputs, with a single Ethernet frame at only 300 µs.

The new module is fitted with smaller and more cost effective central PC, with one Ethernet interface adequate for the periphery’s complete communication.

Designed for harsh industrial applications, the optional SD card of 750-880 has been specifically covered with gold-plating. The new module comes with a built-in switch that allows it to create networks in traditional fieldbus style, which is in daisy chain, rather than having an external switch connect all the devices. The new PROFINET modules eliminate the need for repeaters or extra master interfaces as it cost-efficiently connects numerous inverters to a single bus line. Supporting real-time data transfer, the technology box also features an integrated web server, an integrated Industrial Ethernet switch, and a PROFINET status display.

It also offers a bus module for distributed control that can be fitted either directly on the interface unit of the inverter or separately from the inverter via an optional wall mounting kit. The PROFINET bus line is linked to the module through an RJ45 plug connector.

For distributed control, the bus module can also be connected through an optional M12 circular connector. The new module provides two 24V outputs and eight integrated 24V inputs. This new code scanner is two-thirds smaller than the usual 2D code readers in the market. It offers anti-counterfeiting and traceability in a compact housing as well as reliable stacked, 2D and 1D code identification. For its commissioning, the device eliminates the need for a PC as it can be done via auto set up.

“The LECTOR 620 sets a new standard in barcode and direct part marking (DPM) scanner design. The Universal Drive Module supports DC brushless, AC servo, closed loop two-phase and five-phase step motors and open loop two-phase and five-phase step motors. He added that although other vendors use Ethernet “but they just use the first physical layer – the actual protocol is proprietary and specialist. This means that although they can claim ‘Ethernet compatibility’, it is, in fact, just as closed as any other proprietary protocol.”

With this latest innovation, machine builders can now program, commission, configure and maintain PowerFlex 755 AC drives and Kinetix 6500 servo drives with the outstanding processing capabilities of Allen-Bradley ControlLogix 557X PACs – all over EtherNet/IP.

EtherCAT is a real-time Ethernet technology which aims to maximize the use of the full duplex Ethernet bandwidth. It overcomes the overhead normally associated with Ethernet via employing “on the fly” processing hardware. An EtherCAT bus consists of a master system and up to 65535 slave devices, connected together with standard Ethernet cabling. The slave devices process the incoming data directly, extract or insert relevant data, and transfer the message to the next EtherCAT slave device, making a loop.

There are several protocols that can be used as the application layer. In the CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) technology, the CANopen protocol is applied to EtherCAT. By combining this high speed / data infused protocol with ABB’s feature enriched ACS355 and ACS850 drives, designers can develop robust solutions. The integrated PROFINET interface allows users to operate the device easily with the control. The BCL 548i connects through standardized M12 plugs and ready-made cables suitable for this purpose, making wiring transparent, economical and fail-safe. By combining the switch with the HCS fibers with gradient index FL FOC PN-C-HCS-GI-200/230, transmission distances of up to 250 meters can be achieved. Fiber-optic cable connectors can be assembled on site in less than two minutes. Complex gluing, polishing and crimping are no longer required. With the use of integrated fiber-optic diagnostics, FL switch supports operators when troubleshooting faults, by which the optical system reserve is displayed and the received power is continually measured in the Web-based management system using a Profinet communication or SNMP object. As it supports open standard industrial Ethernet communications protocols, Cognex Connect facilitates monitoring and configuration of a network of Cognex vision systems and ID readers. As a network device, In-Sight and DataMan devices can be accessed from any terminal linked to the network. This eliminates the need for a host PC to translate USB or RS-232 communications to a programmable logic controller (PLC) or central network. The protocols allow for images and data files to be directly archived through FTP support for later analysis and review. DataMan ID readers offer a .NET based command library to customize terminal interfaces and user-specific GUIs, as well as provide control through a simple command line interface.

Process automation has strict requirements for availability and reliability. For instance, plants are required to operate 24/7, 365 days a year with no interruption, and this must be sustained to make improvements in the production process. The causes of errors should be identified immediately, irrespective of the complexity of the actuators and sensors used. Other challenges include the large number of signals in the plant – usually number up to 100,000.

These requirements identified four main aspects that were integrated in the new profile: configuration in run; integration of existing fieldbuses; scalable redundancy; and time synchronization and time stamping.

Manufacturers can now implement these functions in their PROFINET products for process automation applications.

Important basic mechanisms underlying the “PROFINET for Process Automation’ application profile are already in the PROFINET Specification V2.3, which was released just in time for SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010 in November. Aside from the new process automation-relevant specifications, the PROFINET Specification’s new version also includes specifications for high performance.
