href="http://www.skf.com">www.skf.com) has expanded its Nautilus bearing range to provide wind industry designers with greater freedom to develop various types of turbines and direct drive, turbines with a gearbox, mounted on shafts, with inner or outer ring rotation or directly bolted on the surrounding structure.

“With the new range of SKF Nautilus bearings, SKF continues to be at the forefront of innovations. The development benefits manufacturers and the growing service sector for repairs, upgrades and replacements and contributes to reducing the cost of energy,” said Andreas Urban, Business Engineer at SKF Renewable Energy.

Optimizing wind turbine design and operation, the new range of bearings now offers an option to integrate a bolted inner ring, effectively eliminating the surrounding structure’s influences of fits and tolerances, resulting to higher operational safety and reliability and reduced pre-load variation. The bearings also feature integrated pre-greasing and seal to reduce the risk of leakage and contamination while optimizing lubrication.

The company’s Nautilus bearing range has been specifically designed to allow easy replacement of seal above the turbine. A polyurethane or rubber material helps achieve increased durability, high sealing performance and reduce maintenance costs.

Aside from saving time and effort, the bearings also simplify mounting and dismounting as they come with integrated seal and bolted inner ring.

The SKF Nautilus bearings offer special surface treatments that protect against corrosion as well as increase friction between mating surfaces. Meanwhile, its single-pocket segmented cage option delivers a higher degree of flexibility to further increase reliability and cope with deflections in operational conditions.

<a

As part of a massive regeneration project, development work began to turn the island into a large-scale, state-of-the-art tourist resort.

Plans were drawn up for the construction of a bridge that would link the island to the mainland. That same year, it was announced that these new facilities would host the APEC summit in September 2012. A fast-track construction schedule was initiated resulting in the last section of the central span being lifted into place on April 2, 2012. The bridge is expected to be opened for traffic by July 2, 2012.

With Vladivostok being the largest Pacific port in Russia, the bridge had to be high enough to allow passage for any class of vessel. In addition, the Eastern Bosphorous strait is 1460m wide in the bridge project area. The finished bridge breaks numerous world records, rising more than 70m above the high water level, with a central span 1104m long. Pylons 320m high will hold stay cables 580m long.

One of the most demanding phases of construction was the assembly of the central span, made up of 103 panels, each 12m long, 26m wide, and weighing a total of 23,000 tons. The panels are aerodynamically designed to give the bridge maximum stability in the high winds for which the region is renowned. The panels were delivered by barges which were carefully positioned under the installation using GLONASS, a Russian global satellite navigation system.

Lifting the enormous panels from the barges to an elevation of 70m and into position was a precision operation taking about one and a half hours to complete. A special crane needed to be developed for this unique application. That development was put in the hands of the Mostovik Crane Factory, which specializes in the manufacture of large-capacity cranes for the most challenging applications.

A custom-designed Mostovik derrick crane was installed on the bridge center span deck, cantilevered over the nose and facing toward the strait. The crane was equipped with a wind gage, a lifting height indicator, and an indicator that shows precise panel position during the lift.

The application requirements for this particular crane were especially demanding. Not only would it have to lift and safely position panels weighing more than 300 tons each, but it would have to operate reliably in extreme temperatures. Winter temperatures in the region can drop as low as -30°C. To meet these requirements, Mostovik Crane Factory turned to Bauer Gear Motor, an Altra Industrial Motion company, for suitable geared motors.

Bauer supplied BF Series geared motors, with torques from 10100-13400Nm. Setting new standards for reliability, efficiency and economy, BF Series geared motors can be mounted in any required position – horizontally, vertically or suspended – to meet any application requirement. Total flexibility in mounting options includes shaft, foot, face and flange solutions. The motor terminal box can be mounted in alternative positions rotated in 90-degree steps around the motor frame, providing for unparalleled integration possibilities.

Generously dimensioned ball or roller bearings, case-hardened forged and ground gears, and internally and externally reinforced gearboxes ensure a long, low-maintenance service life. A hardened wear sleeve and spray ring at the rotor seal allow for reduced sump capacity, reliable lubrication and many years of leak-free performance.

<a

Important for use in the Russky Island bridge application, the geared motors also provide comprehensive corrosion protection.

Bauer Gear Motor<br

The magnetic 24V encoder serves as the distinguishing feature of the AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B models.

Specifically developed by the company for integration into IP-protected motors, the magnetic encoders yield 1024 increments per revolution and are less sensitive to dust, vibrations, humidity and dirt. The 24V connection at the encoder makes the stepper motors ideally suited for direct control through a PLC or a higher-level control system.

<a

This applies to safety-critical and Z-axes applications.

The AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B stepper motors feature a holding torque of 1.98 Nm, making them perfect substitute to servomotors with gearboxes in Torque Mode as well as Closed Loop at low speeds. This is attributed to their compact design and greater energy efficiency in mechanical engineering devices or even in other systems that demand precise positioning and used in hazardous environments.

Featuring M8 and M12 connections, the stepper motors provides a high degree of electromagnetic compatibility. The AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B motors also have a flange dimension of 56 mm (NEMA 23), making them compatible with all Nanotec stepper motors and suitable for use in mixed environments.

<a

It’s ideal for use in many metrology systems, in compact rotary tables and high dynamic applications such as air bearing spindles, laser trackers and robot arms.

The compact scanning head of the ERO 6000 is made possible primarily by the application of a divergent scanning principle that does not require lenses or other beam-directing optics. The scale graduation is an extremely sturdy and high quality METALLUR graduation and is adhered very accurately to a steel hub. This scanning method is new in HEIDENHAIN angle encoders. The component’s resulting grating period is 20 µm, regardless of diameter.

Small scanning heads usually require small scanning fields, which are more sensitive to contamination due to the scanning principle. To counteract this characteristic, a signal error compensation function is integrated in the encoder’s scanning sensor, which compensates the amplitude size and amplitude ratio within certain limits and thus increases the reliability and safety margin of the device.

Two ERO 6000 design types with line counts of 9,000 and 18,000, respectively, are available. The encoders are available with 1VPP and TTL interfaces. When it comes to mounting, the disk/hub assembly can be centered mechanically via 3-point centering or electrically with a second scanning head.

www.kollmorgen.com) has unveiled an all-stainless steel IP69K-sealed hygienic servomotor, the Stainless Steel W Series motor. The round housing design of the motor promotes long life as well as reliable operation, making it ideal for use in harsh pharmaceutical, food and beverage applications.

Generally, pharmaceutical, food and beverage equipment machine builders utilize as many stainless steel components as possible, even in areas where non-hygienic motors have been used. Aside from being difficult to clean, non-hygienic motors are prone to failure when exposed to rigorous cleaning schedules and harsh operating conditions. The Stainless Steel W Series Hygienic motor serves as the solution to these concerns as it maximizes productivity by delivering the performance that keeps the equipment up and running.

<img

Offering a unique combination of design and performance capabilities, the PRD meets positioning demands for next-generation machine designs.

By merging Nexen’s innovative Roller Pinion System technology with a precision-grade bearing and gearhead, the PRD provides unparalleled performance for indexing and rotary positioning applications. With accelerations twice as high as similar indexing technologies, it can reach speeds up to 300 rpm, and unlike traditional cam-driven systems, the PRD can also handle peak torque inputs at all times. It also offers indexing precision up to ± 11 arcsec with repeatability up to ± 1.2 arcsec. Supported by a high-capacity cross-roller bearing, it’s rated for loads up to 1575 kN, allowing it to accommodate demanding application requirements.

Containing a roller pinion system that is 99 percent efficient and a gearbox that performs at a 96 percent efficiency rating, the PRD meets current industry demands for higher performance capacities at lower energy costs. Its construction also provides continuously smooth motion, minimizing vibration during operation and resulting in less noise than conventional technologies. Also, with the pinion’s lifespan of up to 60,000,000 revolutions, superior rigidity due to the preloaded cross-roller bearing, RPS and precision gearbox, the PRD provides greater durability and longevity over alternative solutions.

The design also minimizes maintenance requirements while enhancing flexibility. The elimination of oil baths allows the PRD to reduce labor and maintenance by not requiring time-consuming clean-ups. Further, the absence of oil baths also lets the drive mount in any orientation. Plus, with the drive’s large open center, it easily mounts to equipment while cabling can be filtered through the center, simplifying installation and improving mounting versatility.

Applications for the PRD include welding systems, positioning systems, medical products, robotics, automotive, aerospace, semiconductors, and material fabrications.

For more information, visit In the past, it was about finding a job that offered what you wanted in terms of working with something you were interested in, the schedule and demand, location, and the atmosphere. But in this economy, now it’s about just finding a job period.

What do you think has been the biggest development in motion control technology over the past five years?
In the past 5 years, there hasn’t really been a major breakthrough. I’d have to say it’s the ability to put so much into smaller packages as compared to years before.

What is one thing you wish you knew at the beginning of your career that you know now?
That you don’t have to know everything. In the real world, you can always look it up. What’s important is your work ethic, ability to learn, and being able to develop enough of a friendship with coworkers to make your work environment an enjoyable place….and networking.

How do you think young engineers today differ from the older generation of engineers?
Mentality wise, there’s no difference. We’ve always been people who wanted to learn how things worked and tried to make them better. But there is something to be said for the advancement of technology and how engineers today have to adapt and interact with it. It’s not enough to know the science and math, you need to know the programming, software, and a communication tools to apply them.

Would you encourage your kids or grandkids to pursue an engineering career?
If it’s what they’re interested in, then absolutely.

What is the coolest project you’ve ever worked on in your career?
American Control Electronics developed an app to run on an Android system to control a custom AGV we built via Bluetooth.

If you could have coffee (or a beer) with one engineer, scientist or inventor, living or dead, whom would it be?
Sir Isaac Newton

report from the firm Frost & Sullivan on the integrated motor and drive market in Europe got me thinking about issues beyond the forecast itself.

First, the specifics. The reports anticipates an annual growth rate for the European integrated motor and drive market of 12.1% from 2010 to 2017. The growth is being projected on the basis of a demand for high efficiency and the need to reduce energy consumption, which together will spark more demand for integrated motor and drives across a wide range of industrial applications.

I got a few things out of the report. First, it struck me as one example of the interconnectedness of markets and industries because of how design variables such as expected efficiency and a concern with energy consumption, and therefore the need to create more energy-efficient systems and products, can drive product designs and trends in many diverse fields.

It also highlights how influential new energy conservation and efficiency standards issued by government agencies and countries are as drivers for industry design and business decisions.

At the same time, I wonder about the role of such forecasts; their impact on businesses and industries and the role they play in decision-making. We’re all well aware of how often rosy or even slightly optimistic (or pessimistic) projections turn out to fall far short of reality.

So what role do forecasts and projections play in your industry? Do you take them to heart or with a grain of salt? Let me know.

Motion Control Tips

Dissatisfied with the speed and control limitations of rotary actuators used in laser scanning and other optical and lighting applications, Pangolin Laser Systems has introduced a low-power rotary actuator based on a new dual-coil, segmented stator design. The VRAD-1510 significantly increases the speed, range of rotation, response, and precision of motor shaft movement while reducing the actuator’s cost by at least a third compared to existing devices.

The key innovation is the patent-pending stator design, which uses a series of asymmetrical, interleaved laminations that are inexpensive to make, easy to assemble, and which fit together in a way that prevents the introduction of air gaps to the motor’s magnetic field.

The design also uses two separately accessible coils and several other innovations resulting in a compact, quiet, and durable low-power actuator. The VRAD-1510 uses a magnetic spring and pre-loaded precision ball bearings for improved durability. The design also precludes the need for mechanical stops on shaft rotation, all but eliminating noise, wear, and vibration, while enabling a wider range of potential applications. The range of shaft rotation is greater than +/- 60 degrees from the neutral position.

The actuator’s coils can be driven in series, parallel, or separately, opening up many options for how the device can be employed. For example, instead of using two coils to produce torque, one can be used for velocity sensing or dynamic breaking. The actuator also incorporates front and rear shafts, allowing multiple points of attachment or the use of an encoder or position sensor for closed-loop operation.

The VRAD-1510 is configurable to customer specifications of all key parameters, including torque factor, magnetic spring stiffness, coil resistance and inductance, shaft diameter and length, bearing pre-load, and temperature operating range. The VRAD-1510 has a rectangular-shaped stator with exterior dimensions of 1.5 x 1.0 x 1.5in.

The VRAD-1510, while conceived for use in high-speed laser scanning and lighting gear, is sufficiently versatile and low cost to be used across a wide range of electro-mechanical applications, including mechanical and automotive systems, industrial and commercial machinery, robotics, vending, HVAC, valve control, and other uses.

A datasheet is available from at

The new BG45SI motors, with a height and width dimension of 44 mm (1.73 in.) feature newly designed digital control and power electronics that offer a significant overall package size reduction of over 25% compared to its predecessors. In addition, the motor connector design has been updated for further space saving and convenience in mounting and connection.

With a 12 or 24 volt power source, at a nominal speed of 3000 rpm, the longer of the two units, the BG45x30SI is continuous duty rated for 80 W (1/10 hp) power output. Based on the improved design, the motors can achieve peak powers of four times the continuous duty rating with a possible starting torque of up to 100 N-cm (142 oz-in).

The motor target speed can be set using an analog +/-10VDC input signal. Alternatively, different set speeds can be selected via digital inputs using simple start-up software. The drive has a total of 4 digital inputs. Of these, two are for selecting the four operating conditions; rotation clockwise/counter-clockwise, stop with free running, and stop with holding torque. The other two digital inputs are designed for the selection of the fixed motor speed with acceleration and deceleration ramps.

In addition, there are 3 digital outputs with pulse output functions (12 pulses per revolution), the direction of rotation – assigned and fault output signal. Other than long-life ball bearings, the motors contain no other wear-prone mechanical components, making them suited for continuous duty applications.

www.beckhoff.com) has unveiled a new series of servo motor that can be used in highly corrosive and extremely harsh environments, making them ideally suited for use in the chemical, pharmaceutical or food industries.

The AM8800 stainless steel servo motor only needs one motor cable rather than the usual two. Available in three different sizes with three overall lengths, the servo motor effectively eliminates the need for feedback cable as the encoder information is digitally transmitted through the motor cable’s two cores. This single-feedback technology reduces engineering and installation expenditures, providing users with a clear material savings.

Featuring a stainless steel motor shaft, the AM8800’s robust all-stainless-steel housing in AISI 316L is extremely resistant to mechanical damage and scratches, and is specifically designed according to the guidelines of FDA.

www.nke.at/en) has unveiled its latest range of electrically insulated rolling bearings. Featuring a built-in electrical insulation, the special bearings SQ77 offers reliable protection from current discharge as well as the resulting electrical corrosion. The electrically insulated rolling bearings are ideally suited for various applications such as generators, electric motors and other electric machines.

The company’s all-new electrically insulated bearings come in three different variants — the SQ77, the SQ77E and the SQ77B series.

The outer ring of the SQ77 series is designed with an oxide ceramic, while the inner ring of the SQ77E features an insulation layer. The SQ77B’s hybrid bearings are integrated with ceramic rolling elements and theoretically infinite insulation resistance.

In addition, the ceramic insulation of the SQ77E and SQ77 series is applied via plasma-spraying. It also features a minimum guaranteed dielectric strength of 1000 V DC or AC.

<a

The stainless steel motors are implemented completely in a food-grade design and can be used in extremely harsh or corrosive environments such as in the food, chemical or pharmaceutical industries.

All motors from the AM8000 series need only one motor cable instead of the usual two. The otherwise necessary feedback cable is eliminated, since the encoder information is transmitted digitally via two cores of the motor cable. The single-cable feedback technology leads to a clear material savings and reduces installation and engineering expenditures.

The AM8800 stainless steel motor series is based on the Beckhoff AM8000 motor series. However, it’s been supplemented by an all-stainless-steel housing in AISI 316L, which was designed according to FDA guidelines, and a stainless steel motor shaft. The series encompasses three sizes, each with three overall lengths. The power range extends from 1 to 8 Nm standstill torque. In designing the motor, corners and edges were avoided; similarly, drill holes and screwed connections were largely dispensed with in order to prevent the accumulation of dirt. The motor flanges are implemented in B5 form and are compatible with the AM8000 series flanges, simplifying the conversion of existing plants and machinery.

Power losses have been kept low because of the optimum connection of the stators to the stainless steel housing. The motors are implemented without additional cooling and the thermal conductivity of stainless steel is approximately 14 times lower than the aluminum housing of the motor in its standard version. All AM8000 servomotors are equipped with a sensor for temperature monitoring, which passes the data on to the drive via the single cable. The data can be processed in the higher-level controller in such a way that the motor can be intelligently controlled in relation to its temperature, a useful function when processing easily perishable foods.

Equipped with IP 67 protection, optionally also in IP 69K rating, the AM8800 motors are even suitable for cleaning with high-pressure cleaners, which are commonly used in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Connection using ‘hygienically designed’ stainless steel cable glands ensures the permanent sealing integrity of the motors. As a special feature, the AM8800 motors can be provided with a sealing air connection in order to prevent the formation of condensation inside the motor. They can also be equipped with a holding brake or a multi-turn encoder, depending on the application requirements.

For more information, visit www.allegromicro.com) has unveiled the all-new A4975, a motor driver IC that can drive a single winding of a bipolar stepper motor in microstepping mode. Its output has been rated for operating voltages of up to 50 V and for continuous output current of up to ±1.5 A.

Allegro’s A4975 seamlessly combines an internal three-bit non-linear digital-to-analog converter with an internal pulse width modulated (PWM) current control, enabling it to control the motor current in eighth-, quarter-, half-, or full-step (microstepping) modes. Its nonlinear increments reduce the number of control lines required for microstepping. Reducing resonance problems and torque variation at low speed, microstepping also offers increased step resolution, making the device ideally suited for office automation as well as industrial markets with end applications including scanners, printers and copiers.

<a

Combining user-selectable current-sensing resistor with digitally selected output current ratio, reference voltage and mixed, slow, or fast current-decay modes delivers a wide, variable range of motor control.

Its internal circuit protections feature an undervoltage monitor, thermal shutdown with hysteresis and crossover-current protection.

Available in two selectable power packages, the motor driver IC also eliminates the need for special power-up sequencing. Lead (Pb) free, both package styles are offered in 100 percent matte tin leadframe plating and require no electrical isolation as its thermally enhanced pins are at ground potential.

<a

The Simocode pro, for instance, offers integrated web diagnostics and a server for OPC UA, which is the communication standard in automation of multi-vendor. With an Internet browser, all service and diagnostic data relevant to the motor feeders, such as measured values, status information and statistics and service data, can be called up through the web server and a network connection.

Meanwhile, its integrated OPC UA server can also call data from higher-level Scada system through field level HMI panels.

Simocode pro’s basic unit with Profinet interface has also been integrated with Profienergy. The motors, which are centrally controlled through Profinet, can be turned off during breaks. Using the Profienergy protocol, the status information and measured values can be called up, allowing efficient load and energy management, and resulting to reduced costs and energy requirements for the plant.

<a

This makes the encoders ideal for use on compact but highly dynamic servo motors for industrial robots and automation technology. Attaining a resolution of 34 bits — 18 bits for singleturn and 16 bits for multiturn, the encoder’s modular design with a battery-buffered revolution counter and without a ball bearing allows for very compact dimensions.

The optimized inductive scanning of the new EBI 1135 encoder is possible since it operates without optical components, such as LED and glass scale, which can be handicapped by vibration, contamination, high temperature and shock. Unlike multiturn scanning that comes with a mechanical transmission, the sturdy encoder delivers high permissible axial scanning gap tolerance of +/- 0.3 mm and an expanded voltage range of between 3.6 V and 14 V.

In addition, its distinguishable revolutions were significantly expanded to multiturn value range of 65 536, effectively increasing the options of the customer.

www.a-m-c.com) has unveiled its powerful DZE and DZS series of servo drives, which is part of its Z-Drives platform of plug-in servo drives. Ideal for EtherCAT enabled control networks that come in a compact package, these products not only reduce cost but also deliver precise motion when utilized in a multiple networked axes system.

Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) continuously deliver motion control precision at the most affordable cost. The advent of EtherCAT, which is an open network standard based on Ethernet, has significantly boosted precision and has set new heights for topology flexibility and real-time performance.

<a

This effectively eliminates the cost of added EtherCAT nodes, leading to reduced overall system cost. In addition, DxM technology makes master tasks in multi-axis systems simpler as it easily handles all sub-node activity through a single node.

Advanced Motion Controls has also introduced its latest DPE series of EtherCAT enabled servo drives, which is part of its panel mount DigiFlex Performance platform. Both DZE’s and DPE’s can be employed as part of a multiple axes EtherCAT network or as stand-alone EtherCAT slave nodes of single axis setups.

Meanwhile, the DZS’s can be utilized as sub-nodes of a DxM configuration that comes with a DZE node.

www.huebner-giessen.com) has developed a new range of magnetic encoders that can be installed without housings or bearings. The new MAG(-G) 50-1200 magnetic encoders can transmit interference-free signals under extreme conditions while its system has been specifically designed to withstand shocks and vibration. This new technology serves as an alternative to traditional optical scanning principle, which requires a closed housing protection and a bearing-supported shaft.

With north-south poles, the company’s magnetic scanning principle employs a stationary sensor to record the magnetic field changes of the rotating pulse wheel, while the alternating magnetic field generates a rectangular or sinusoidal voltage in the sensor. In addition, the magnetic scanning principle also makes the encoders resistant to soiling while delivering large axial and radial tolerances.

The developer noted that the MAG(-G) 50-1200 magnetic encoders are low-noise and wear-free devices. Its variant with a split pulse wheel is ideally suited for upgrades and retrofits and for applications without a free shaft end. The magnetic encoder technology is effective in various industrial applications, such as ship drives, steel mills, pumped storage power stations, gas and water turbines, conveyors, large excavators and drilling rigs.

The encoders can be adjusted to meet the specific requirements of the customers, said Huebner.

The all-new magnetic encoders can be installed even in highly confined spaces attributed to their narrow design. The system of the encoders with shaft diameter ranging from 16 mm to 1,000 mm can flexibly adapt to the set-up of the customer’s application. For attaching the pulse wheel, various options are offered, depending on the actual design conditions, such as screw mounting and hot shrink fitting and mounting by clamping plates, clamping pieces or tolerance sleeves.

<a
