The machine controller’s primary operations include scanning I/O, updating output and process control. After an initialization phase, the controller will continuously read inputs, calculate control parameters for the machine process using application-specific logic based on the input data, and then update outputs to the machine. If the controller is turned off, some shutdown process may be completed.

The central part of a machine controller is the controller itself, which can take on several forms. For single machine control, a programmable logic controller (PLC) or a programmable automation controller (PAC) is usually sufficient to handle the job. PLCs are usually programmed using ladder logic or sequential function charts. The controller receives various sensor data, processes this information and executes controls via some combination of digital and/or analog I/O signals to turn on or off processes, actuate or stop movement, and take user or environmental input and make decisions based on these inputs. Machine controllers will generally work together with some type of human-machine interface (HMI). These can be either integrated with the controller as one piece or can be stand-alone units that communicate with the controller.

More recently, machine control has seen a move to PACs because they can offer better performance and a wider range of functions than traditional PLCs. For instance, PACs can support high-speed data acquisition and processing, as well as motion control and vision functions.

In order to take advantage of all the features and capabilities of a PAC, the application code must be well designed, balancing and coordinating various controller processes such as I/O, process control logic, communication to an HMI unit and other tasks.

There are a number of considerations to keep in mind when selecting a machine controller. One of the most important is the number and type (i.e. analog or digital) of I/O the controller will have to handle. Also, do the speed requirements of the machine match up with the controller’s capabilities? For instance, some machine controllers may be tasked with closing servo loops and thus must be capable of handling such a task.

Another consideration is the type of communication link needed. The machine may have special demands or may be wired to accommodate a specific networking protocol, so ensure that the controller can communicate with the machine. Related to the communication link is the programming environment. Is the controller simple to program? Can programs be edited quickly and easily? Lastly, consider any environmental factors in which the machine will have to operate such as shock and vibration, extreme temperatures, and moisture or humidity.

The KPD202-501 features a backlit 4-line x 20-character LCD surrounded by six programmable function keys, enabling unambiguous, and actionable, multiple-choice menus to be presented to the machine operator. A further 15 keys provide for entering numeric values, together with four pairs of keys for functions such as jogging individual machine axes.

The KPD202-501 operator panel is easy to fit and set up. The panel can be accommodated with minimal impact on layout and merely requires a rectangular cut-out in the fascia; built-in mounting clamps secure the unit by compressing its bezel gasket against the surrounding fascia. The only connections needed are a 24 VDC power feed and the desired communications link. As standard, the panel is equipped with a CANopen port, which offers a choice of D-type and RJ45 plug-in connectors, and a user-selectable RS232/485 serial port.

Majority of CC-Link I/O networks are being operated by control cabinets. IP20 I/O modules are typically placed in costly and bulky enclosures. Due to the need to terminate all I/O points, the solutions are very labor intensive and costly. Ideal for harsh environments, the compact EtherCAT module in protection class IP 67 allows the connection of Beckhoff stepper motors up to 50VDC and 5A. An integrated incremental encoder connection on the EP7041 permits the implementation of a single servo axis with the compact IP 67 module.

Within the housing, which measures 5-in. x 1.2-in. x 1-in. (126 x 30 x 26.5mm), the EP7041 contains an encoder connection, two digital inputs for limit switches and a digital output for a brake, ensuring that all signals from a motor are combined in one compact box. For the past few years, a consistent increase in electronic efficiency has reduced power dissipation to the point that I/O points doubled its packing density today, which results in multiple cost advantages: control cabinets’ space requirements can be reduced and the price per digital I/O channel significantly drops.

The 16-channel Bus Terminals feature new possibilities for project planning: greatly reduce the field of control technology that allows designers to build their systems and machines to be more compact and even smaller.

The HD Terminals with 16 digital I/O channels have the same external dimensions to existing Bus Terminals from Beckhoff and are compatible with them. Also, the flexible HD Terminals have different versions, e.g. as eight-channel terminals for digital outputs and inputs with two-wire connection, as combination terminals with eight digital outputs and eight digital inputs or as 16-channel terminals for digital outputs or inputs.

Wiring efforts are simplified despite higher channel density because of tool-less assembly. Using the direct plug-in technique, single wire conductors are connected without tools. The feature resides in the panel and requires no option modules. Since applications can be downloaded from the C-more panel through a PC’s Web browser, authorized users can access and control the panel remotely without purchasing or downloading additional software packages.

The remote access feature contains multilevel logon security allowing up to three user accounts. Each account can be configured in one of three password-protected access levels: View Only, View and allow Screen Change only, and Full Control. Each account is tag supported, giving the local operator the ability to enable or disable remote access accounts if required. Once accounts are created, authorized users can remotely control and monitor real-time screen operations, and troubleshoot and test C-more project applications. Users can also view, zoom, print and save screen captures of active screens.

The new feature can be used on any C-more panel equipped with an Ethernet port and firmware version 2.4 or later. C-more programming software version 2.4 or later is also required.

Illuminated and non-illuminated pushbuttons are available in six colors and come with either one normally-open or one normally-closed contact block. Illuminated and non-illuminated selector switches are available in two and three-position as well as key operated versions. Joysticks come in either two-position or three-position versions with either maintained or momentary operation mechanisms. Two position joysticks come with two normally-open contacts while three-position models have four normally-open contacts.
