Absolute Multi-turn Encoders with Integrated Servo Motors from JVL

JVL Industri Elektronik’s integrated servo MAC400 and MAC800 can now be delivered with built-in absolute multi-turn encoders, with a multi-turn resolution of +/-2048 whole turns, and a single-turn resolution of either 8000 or 8192 (software-selectable) with option for higher resolutions.

Motors equipped with absolute encoders will remember their positions while powered off, thus typically eliminating a zero search operation on start up. The position is stored mechanically using toothed wheels, so there will not be any of the problems with batteries that run down, or memories that loose information, that many other systems have.

The full absolute encoder position is available at all times for use by a PLC over any of the serial or fieldbus interfaces and can be used freely in a program.

High-speed MODBUS with Integrated Servo Motors from JVL

JVL Industri Elektronik A/S now offers yet another feature: The latest firmware for the integrated servo motors MAC400 and MAC800 now supports the MODBUS RTU protocol.

JVL MAC800 400 with modbus

The implementation supports the Read Holding Registers and Write Multiple Registers commands, which will give R/W access to all motor registers at speeds up to 1 Mbit/s, though typically the PC standard rates of 9600..115200 and 230400 bits/s would be used.

The implementation uses the original V1.1 version of the MODBUS protocol for maximum compatibility. For systems requiring a 2-wire RS-485, the MAC00-P4 interface module is used. For 4-wire RS-422, the MAC00-FSx modules or one of the MAC00-Bx modules are used.

MODBUS is generally considered the most widely used serial communications protocol in the industry.

400W MAC400 Integrated AC Servo Motor

A unique feature on the market for integrated servo drivers is the JVL MAC400 motor’s provision of both 3 x nominal torque at peak torque and full peak torque at all speeds.

This means that the power of the motor can be fully utilized. Equally important is the fact that in the majority of applications a smaller motor rating can be used, since peak torque is normally only required during acceleration or braking (deceleration). And this means it is possible to achieve more compact machinery at lower prices.JVL has had these 2 characteristics as key parameters throughout the development of the entire range of MAC Integrated Servo Motors — and triple-torque with flat torque characteristics therefore also applies to the MAC050…141 and MAC800 motors.

MAC400 thus delivers 1.2kW peak, while MAC800 delivers 2.2kW peak.Given these characteristics, it is quite remarkable that JVL’s R&D department achieved this performance without the use of a cooling fan, using only cooling fins. After the extensive development work, JVL now expects to have the MAC400 UL recognized. Already now the MAC400 is UL pending.

Integrated AC Servo Motor

In recent years, integrated brushless servo motors from JVL have achieved a very high reputation throughout the world for their ingenious design. The existing range of 50 to 141W and 800W motors has now been supplemented with the introduction of a mid-range 400W model offering 1.3 Nm up to 3000rpm and shortly up to 1200W for highly dynamic applications.

All of these motors are small, compact, and easy to install and set up. The driver, controller, encoder and Hall sensor are all integrated within the motor in a robust, splash-proof housing. The basic motors offer the following standard features:

•Operating commands from PC/PLC via RS232/422/485
•Pulse/Direction or quadrature inputs for electronic gearing
•A+B encoder output
•Velocity and torque control, either controlled digitally or via ±12bit, ±10V inputs
•Positioning via digital interface
•Software-controlled end-of-travel stops
•Selection of acceleration, maximum velocity, torque, etc.
•6th-order servo filter
•Sine commutation with 2048 PPR encoder. (8196 pulses/revolution.)
•Alarm and ”in position” outputs
•3 inputs and 3 outputs for High Speed start/stop and capture applications
•Internal Power Dump

The new MAC400 provides the same features as the larger MAC800 model and in addition offers:

•Absolute multiturn encoder (Q2 2009)
•Prepared for PowerLink; EtherCAT; Ethernet/IP; ProfiNet and SERCOS
•Even lower cost due to newest technology and production techniques
•Improved 2-channel power dump circuit
•2 RS422 channels for encoder in/output and SSI encoder, etc.
•6 IO for capture of position; interrupt, counters, enable, timer and PLC functions
•High-speed serial interface
•Plugable power connectors
•Natural cooling, no fan

The new MAC400 model has been developed because of customer requests for a mid-range solution in the highly successful MAC series. The MAC400 fully lives up to the strict requirements JVL put on all the MAC motors regarding performance, versatility and reliability.
