maxon motor Expands Line of Industrial Type Brushed DC Motors

September 14, 2010 by

maxon motor is expanding its existing range of industrial type versions with the addition of two new motor sizes with IP54 protection rating as well as mounting brakes. The two powerful and mechanically commutated DC motors, with output powers of 200 and 250 watts are protected on the commutation side with sealed aluminum housing. The cable outputs are sealed with PG cable fittings, and the shaft is secured with a radial shaft seal to guarantee IP54 rating on the flange side.

maxon motor re50 dc motor

These two industrial versions, with diameters of 50 and 65 mm, are available as standard with various winding options. They achieve nominal torque of up to 0.9 Nm, nominal speeds of up to 5,500 rpm and an efficiency level of over 90%.

Low nominal voltage, high power density, a flexible combination range and IP54 protection rating make both power packages the ideal choice for use in industrial equipment, such as automatic dispensing machines, handling and packaging machinery, as well as in battery-operated applications such as electric vehicles, transport and logistics facilities.

Powerful Positioning Controller offers various operating modes

Maxon (www.maxonmotorusa.com) is proud to announce its expanded EPOS (“Easy to use Positioning System”) for its second generation. The brushless EC motors with Hall encoders and sensors or the EPOS2 70/10 drives DC brush motors with encoders, from five to 700 watts power.

maxon motor EPOS2 70 10 open

The new unit is packed with a broad range of features and functions and it can handle a multitude of operational modes (“Current Mode, Velocity, Position and others”), thus allowing flexible employment of drive systems in mechatronics and automation. Among the functions is the Master Encoder Mode for the drive’s utilization in electronic gearing applications or Step/Direction Mode for step-by-step movement of the motor (“as a replacement for a stepper motor”). Commanding through an analog set value voltage can replace conventional servo amplifier applications.

The EPOS2 70/10 has high-precision motion control functionality. For instance, the controller offers a dual loop position and speed controller. It means that the load is controlled directly, extremely and precisely with an additional sensor, thus elasticity and mechanical play can be compensated for. Because of the Interpolated Position Mode (“PVT”), the EPOS2 positioning drive has the capability to synchronously run a path specified by interpolating points with high accuracy and great dynamics.

When commissioning, Regulation Tuning allows an extremely efficient adjustment of position regulation, current or velocity. Its integration into the EPOS Studio, a graphic user interface, allows fast parameterization.

The unit is controlled by means of a CAN Master (“for example EPOS2 P, programmable logic controller, Soft PLC”) or with PC through RS232 or USB. Its standardized CANopen interface allows coordination and integration of several drives. Moreover, integrated gateway functions (“RS232-to-CAN, USB-to-CAN”) facilitate access-to-CAN frameworks.

Maxon’s RE 50′s “heart” is, as with all mechanically commutated maxon motor drives, the ironless rotor, which results in detent-free running and minimized mass inertia. The combination of a two-pole Neodymium permanent magnet with the patented maxon winding technology results in high torque and remarkable acceleration.

maxon re50 dc motor

The drive measures Ø50 x 108 mm and is available with four different windings. It reaches a nominal torque of up to 0.38 Nm, a nominal speed of 2800 to 5700 rpm and an efficiency of more than 90%. Low nominal voltage (24.70 VDC) and high power density make the RE 50 an excellent choice for the use in battery-powered applications, such as electric vehicles, transport and logistics equipment, mobile systems, robots, etc.

Pre-loaded bearings contribute to low-vibration and quieter running and an extensive life span. The well proven maxon modular system offers matching planetary gearheads, encoders and control systems. Look for more information soon on a dust and splash water protected RE 50 version, which will be available with an optional brake.

Maxon motor introduces the brushless EC 25. Designed for high speed applications of up to 70,000 rpm and has an extremely low vibration characteristic and minimized scale. The motor is equipped with preloaded ball bearings and a two pole Neodymium permanent magnet.

maxon ec25 dc motor

The motor measures at Ø25 x 84 mm and is rated for nominal voltage of 36 VDC and reaches a nominal torque of up to 42.2 mNm, nominal speed 61,600 rpm with efficiency above 93%. The motor-specific speed/torque gradient amounts to 44.9 rpm/mNm. This EC25 motor is particularly suitable for high speed spindle-driven applications, as required in medical technology (surgical power tools, dental drills, etc.) or machine tools (manufacture of optical lenses, fabrication of printed circuit boards, etc.).

For fast-rotating applications, a friction-reduced, low-vibration operation over the entire speed range is necessary. This can only be achieved with high-precision balancing and preloaded ball bearings.

Sterilizable Drives from maxon motor

maxon motor launches two sterilizable drives for use with or without planetary gearheads in high speed medical applications of up to 90,000 rpm. The drives are characterized by their high nominal speed, extremely low-noise and low-vibration operation, marginal thermal emission and small size.

maxon sterilizable

The drives are identical and possess equal performance data and characteristics. The motor and gearhead of Size 5 version possess dimensions in U.S. Customary Units resulting in an outside diameter of ؽ inch and a shaft of Ø0.125 inch. The motor has a “Servo Mount”, a well-established type of motor fixation. The EC13/GP13 version is expressed in metrics, which results in an outer diameter of Ø13 mm, a Ø3 mm shaft and a flange with 3 face side threads.

Despite their “personalized outer wrapping”, the two drives are characterized by their similarities. Both are ideal for medical design applications; compact design with very high nominal speed, quiet running, minimized thermal emission and sterilizability of typically 500 autoclave cycles. Both are available either equipped with Hall sensors or sensorless as well as with three different windings. The gearheads come with versions of one, two or three stages as well as with or without output end shaft sealing.

maxon motor Launches New CANopen Positioning Module

As an addition to the digital positioning controllers of the EPOS family, maxon motor now presents an OEM version. The miniaturized EPOS2 Module 36/2 is designed to control brush DC motors as well as brushless EC motors. This plug-in module offers full motion control functionalities and suits single-axis and multiple-axis applications of miniature size. The EPOS2 Module 36/2 is the perfect drive solution for equipment designers.

maxon epos2

This plug-in module integrates seamlessly into customer applications. One major advantage of the position controller is its outstanding flexibility. It can be operated in various operational modes; as position controller, but also as speed controller or as current controller. This characteristic permits the use of the module in a vast range of drive systems. Thus, the EPOS2 Module 36/2 can be applied wherever decentralized drive management is needed. With its size of only 54x28x9 mm, performance characteristics of 36 Volt max and 2 Amp, the module is especially suitable as an OEM component in miniature apparatus manufacturing.

As with all products of the EPOS series, this module has also been developed to command and control within a CANopen network. It also can communicate via USB or RS232 interface. Additionally, step motors can be substituted by employing the featured “Step/Direction Mode” and the “Master Encoder Mode” transforms the drive into an electronic gearbox. Control via an analogue set value voltage can replace conventional servo amplifier setups.
