Portescap’s Low-Voltage Servo Drive features high power-density package

Portescap (www.portescap.com) has unveiled a high-performance low-voltage servo drive specifically designed to support large and small Brushless orBrushedDC motors. Powered from a 12 VDC to 48 VDC supply voltage, LVD features a high power-density package, and offers seven Amps RMS continuous as well as 12 Amps RMS peak current including a CANopen communication interface.

Offering extensive functionality with multiple I/O inputs, LVD can be operated in Velocity, Position or Current modes. The drive supports both DC and BLDC motors, and operates at a voltage ranging from 12 V to 48 V. Its selectable switching frequency allows the drive to support low inductance motors, effectively making it ideally suited for various applications, such as surveillance cameras, highly-sensitive medical applications and semiconductor wafer handling processes.

Its highly flexible tuning capabilities and space vector modulation current loop enables the LVD to deliver outstanding accuracy and performance. The drive also provides high sampling rates for the Position and Velocity loops, enabling increased accuracy and wider bandwidth.

Although the low-voltage drive measures just 117 x 83.5 x 21.5 mm, and weighs only 250 g, its compact scale does not mirror the power versatility that it can deliver. With switching frequency of up to 100 KHz and 12 Amps RMS peak current, LVD is one of the industry’s most potent low voltage drive, providing space efficiencies without sacrificing performance.

The Axis Manager of LVD, which is an easy to use drive commissioning software, features various control loops tuning, user friendly windows feedback and motor configuration, I/O setup window and comprehensive recording and monitoring features. It communicates with the drive through CANopen or RS232.

Portescap unveils coreless DC motors with REE technology

Portescap (www.portescap.com) has announced that its coreless DC motors range meets the demanding requirements of intrinsic safety application with proprietary Reduced Electro Erosion (REE) technology.

“DC motor commutation is accomplished via brushes, which leads to electrical arcing during rotation. To reduce electro erosion while extending commutator life, Portescap innovated the proprietary REE coil system to reduce the effective inductivity of brush commutation by optimizing the mutual induction of the coil segments,” said Dave Beckstoffer, Project Manager for Strategic Markets.

“Portescap conducted tests on motors with and without REE coil optimization and found that commutator surface wear with REE coils showed improvements ranging from 100 to 300 percent.”

Aside from the benefits of REE technology, the company’s brush DC coreless motors also offers salient features such as no cogging, low moment of inertia, high efficiency, compact commutation and low friction resulting in high acceleration, higher continuous torque and very low joule losses. The motors deliver maximum continuous torque ranging between 0.66 mNm and 158.6 mNm, a low motor regulation factor (R/K2) of .3 103/Nms, and no load speed that range from 11,000 RPM (eight mm) to 5,500 RPM (35 mm).

Its intrinsically safe motor operation is especially important in ambulatory applications subject to extra-ordinary operating conditions and/or harsh environments. Typical applications include environmental analyzers, fuel cells and gas analyzers.

R08 Planetary Gearhead from Portescap

WEST CHESTER, PA – Portescap introduces the R08 Planetary Gearhead, an incredibly robust gearhead that delivers high continuous torque of 0.05 Nm within a smaller overall envelope of 8mm than its comparable models. Portescap’s inherent design features provide increased gearhead life and durability making it capable of delivering twice the radial load carrying capacity (upto 10N) when compared to competitive models. The standard gearbox is available from 4 to 256 ratios which can be further extended to higher ratios of 4096. The R08 gearhead can be coupled with Brush DC, Brushless and Stepper motors in their respective frame sizes. It can also be customized to meet specific customer application requirements.

Design improvements include a unique crimping process performed along with the press fit that significantly increases strength and shock absorption capacity. Users will also benefit from a monobloc shaft that reduces the total number of components thus reducing the cost of ownership and the metallic tube which lowers noise, while increasing the overall robustness and torque output of the complete assembly.

The small frame size, robust design and high torque output makes R08 planetary gearheads well suited for use in medical applications such as insulin/implantable pumps, imaging (collimators, radiography) and biotic fingers, security and access applications such as door locks, cameras and alarm systems, instrumentation applications such as industrial robots, and aerospace and defense applications such as small robotics for underwater particle or mine detection.

West Chester, PA – Portescap expands its family of brush DC motors with their 35GLT motors. These RoHS-compliant motors have a 35mm housing and weigh just 360 grams, while delivering a 40% increase in torque-to-volume ratio when compared with standard iron core motors of similar frame size. The maximum continuous torque approaches 150 mNm in the 35GLT, a 25% improvement over similar conventional models. They are available with five winding types in the voltage range of 24V to 90V, and are cost-effectively customizable for use with a range of gearboxes and encoders.

The higher continuous torque and output power, in a compact lighter weight frame, reduce operator fatigue, which is vital in applications such as power hand tools. 35GLT motors are also well suited for use in food processing, door automation, feed and assembly tool, seat automation, missile actuation and hospital bed applications, among other applications where high continuous torque is a requirement.

For highly demanding applications such as lab automation, in which heat management is a prerequisite, 35GLT motors not only have less ambient heat dissipation (measured by Joule loss) than comparable motors, but they can also be customized with a proprietary fiber wrap insulation to further minimize heat dissipation.

Portescap’s h3 Stepper Motors

WEST CHESTER, PA – Portescap offers a stator-enhanced version of its h3 Series Step Motors. New h3 models feature patented enhancing magnets in the stator to provide 25+% more torque output across the entire speed range compared with original h3 models, which already deliver up to 40% more torque than traditional hybrid step motors.

portescap h3

With its industry-leading efficiency and performance, the h3 allows machine builders to reduce the size and weight of their machine by utilizing a smaller motor to deliver the same performance of larger hybrid steppers. This further allows machine builders to use smaller drives, which reduces power requirements and overall system costs. Machine builders using the same size h3 as a standard hybrid will realize increased machine throughput. As a result, these RoHS-compliant hybrid step motors are an ideal solution in medical device, semiconductor equipment and laboratory instrumentation applications.

These 1.8-degree step motors feature aluminum housing for superior heat dissipation, Neodymium iron boron magnets for optimized torque density, and a bearing retainer and o-ring to help reduce motor noise. Larger bearings enable the motor to effectively handle higher side and radial loads. They are available in NEMA 17, 23 and 34 frame sizes, with various stack lengths available in each frame size. Windings can be customized to suit individual application needs.
