title="Servomotor" href="http://www.motioncontroltips.com/category/motors/servo-motor/" target="_blank">servomotor is can be a tricky exercise, but basically the hallmark of any servomotor is the presence of feedback and closed-loop control. Servomotors are able to provide precise control of torque, speed or position using closed-loop feedback. They also have the ability to operate at zero speed while maintaining enough torque to maintain a load in a given position. Servomotors have several distinct advantages over other types of motors. For starters, they offer more precise control of motion. This means they can accommodate complex motion patterns and profiles more readily. Also, because the level of precision offered is high, the position error is greatly reduced.

All servomotors have essentially three components; an electric motor, a feedback device, and some type of electronic control.

The electric motor itself can be either an ac or a dc motor. Under the dc heading, brushed dc servomotors are generally less expensive than brushless servos, but do require more maintenance due to the brushes needed for motor commutation.

Brushless servomotors are more expensive than brushed dc motors. Generally, these are used in applications requiring higher torque. Brushless dc servomotors are highly reliable and virtually maintenance free. However, the drives for brushless dc servomotors are more complex because the commutation is done electronically rather than mechanically as in the brushed dc motor.

Another way to classify servomotors can be as either single-phase or three-phase motors. Motors of the single-phase variety can range from the simple and inexpensive brushed dc motors mentioned above to voice coils for small micro- and nano-positioning applications.

Servomotors also require a form of feedback, often with the feedback device, such as an encoder, built right into the motor frame. The feedback signal is needed by the control circuitry to close the control loop. It is this closed-loop control that gives servomotors their precise positioning ability.

Lastly, the control circuitry typically involves a motion controller, which generates the motion profile for the motor, and a motor drive which supplies power to the motor based on the commands from the motion controller.

Servomotors are used in many different industrial applications from machine tools, packaging machinery, communications and robotics applications to newer applications such as solar panel control and a broad range of automation control applications. The diversity of applications means that servomotors are designed for general-purpose indoor environments but also for specialized situations requiring them to withstand extreme temperatures and pressures outdoors as well as the special demands of food processing industries in washdown environments.

<a

Its pre-tensioned, double anchored ballscrews further improve machining accuracy by minimizing the thermal growth effects, while direct coupled servo motors eliminate backlash.

“Even though we had been impressed by the performance of our two older Victor lathes, prior to the purchase of the Vturn 36, we examined the merits of several alternative, large CNC lathes. Although our first class experience with the company’s machine tools may have influenced our decision, I truly believe that the Victor Vturn 36 best met our long list of criteria. In fact, the rapid payback on investment we have experienced with Victor machines means that we hope to be purchasing a further bar fed, Victor CNC lathe in the near future,” said John Tovey, managing director of Qualitek.

<a

The company will showcase a new HyperMach H4000 GTi with hard-metal cutting demonstrations using the latest five-axis HSK100A 6000rpm/850Nm high-torque geared spindle.

<a

Its modular machine design is also available with part capacities from 6.6×13.1 ft (“2×4 m”) to 6.6×26.3 ft (“2×8 m”). Unlike other T-type machine designs – which require frequent re-alignment and lose up to 80% of their stiffness to maintain accuracy – the patented structural link of HyperMach GTi gives lock-up between the column and the X-axis table base to give stiffness for aggressive cuts in the upper limits of the workzone.

Its X-axis table/pallet receiver gives feed rates up to 2000 inches/min (“50 m/min”), while the Y-axis can reach vertical speeds up to 1378 inches/min (“35 m/min”) to minimize parasitic time. Water-cooled servo motors can be used on X, Y and Z axes of the GTi series machines to maximize performance for high deceleration/acceleration and feed rates and to eliminate thermal influence of the motors on positioning accuracy. Its spindle carrier rotates at 10 rpm (“60 degrees/sec”) in A and C axes, which is powered by worm/wheel drives. The scale/encoder feedback on all five axes gives accuracy above the capabilities of other horizontal machines, and the optional Volumetric Error Compensation package from MAG can enhance the GTi series machine’s volumetric performance by 50% or more. The machines come standard with the 72-tool magazine, which is field expandable from 110 to 142 tools.

Motion Control Tips

Elk Grove Village, Ill. – Siemens has introduced new motors to its 1FT7 family, a line of high-performance servomotors for such demanding motion control applications as machine tool CNC interpolation and production machine web handling.

The new additions include a forced ventilated and water-cooled motor, complementing the convection air-cooled 1FT7. A new high dynamic design is also available. This design features low rotor inertia, making these motors practical in applications where it was previously impossible to drive a servomotor. Such applications include sorters in the printing industry, which previously required mechanical cams, but can now use electronic cams for better energy efficiency and less wear.

Their use results in shorter machine cycles due to higher dynamic response, gained through a 30% shorter design and 4x overload capacity versus 3x on the predecessor family of servos. Less downtime results from the new rigid vibration-insulated encoder mounting. This design also enables OEMs or end-users to exchange the encoder in the field in less than five minutes, without encoder alignment. High-resolution encoders, currently up to 22-bit, let these servos become highly precise motion control system components.

Start-up and commissioning personnel will appreciate DRIVE-CLiQ, the Siemens electronic nameplate and digital encoder interface on this new servomotor. It simplifies start-up or replacement by not requiring manual parameterization of the axis, as the drive reads all that data from the electronic nameplate stored in the encoder system. With this feature, these motors become essentially plug-and-play devices. The drive automatically recognizes the motor and optimizes the parameterization accordingly. This digital encoder interface further allows users to standardize on one signal cable type for all the different feedbacks offered with the 1FT7 motors.

For a catalog or more information on these new servomotors, please contact Siemens at 847-640-1595 of fax at 847-437-0784.

<a

Equally important is the fact that in the majority of applications a smaller motor rating can be used, since peak torque is normally only required during acceleration or braking (deceleration). And this means it is possible to achieve more compact machinery at lower prices.JVL has had these 2 characteristics as key parameters throughout the development of the entire range of MAC Integrated Servo Motors — and triple-torque with flat torque characteristics therefore also applies to the MAC050…141 and MAC800 motors.

<span

After the extensive development work, JVL now expects to have the MAC400 UL recognized. Already now the MAC400 is UL pending.

The IP65 protection of the motor has been achieved by replacing the ventilator built into the cooling fins with large fins. In addition, a water-tight seal of the axle bearing has been achieved using an IP67 Rulon® Teflon bush. This has very low friction and requires no lubrication. The flange and shaft are made of stainless steel. Note that the expansion module used must also fulfil IP65 requirements. The motor in the picture is furthermore equipped with a brake.

<a

Using the latest production methods, some specially developed by MicroMo, the company has come up with a modular design that is limited to just a few components and entirely eliminates the need for adhesive-bonded joints. Despite the compact dimensions, the new four-pole concept of the series ensures a high continuous torque of up to 12 mNm, with a flat gradient of the n/M aspect curve.

<span

Thanks to its electronic commutation, the brushless servo motor series is characterized by a much longer service life than mechanically commutated drives. In the basic version the commutation is provided by an external control, the flexible motor concept of the BX4 series also offers versions with integrated speed controller or integrated encoder. The encoder version is available in four different preset resolutions: 32, 64, 128, or 256 quadrature impulses per revolution. It is available with an optional line driver and differential output signal. In addition to mechanical speed adjustment, the new planetary gearheads of the 22F series also allow a temporary torque increase up to 1500 mNm. Designed with one to four stages, the precision gearhead in steel 21 offers finely graduated reduction ratios, and the diameters can be combined in conformity with the BX4 drives.

The module can be delivered with integrated cable with watertight connections for use in harsh environments or be delivered with M12 connectors. The modular built-up of the JVL Integrated MAC motors makes them extremely versatile for very many applications.

The MAC motor is an AC servo motor and controller combined in a single unit, offering previously unseen low pricing for the OEM market. Integrating electronics in a motor has been achieved previously, but never in such a compact unit with true AC servo performance. In the MAC motor, the servo motor, hall sensors, encoder and control circuitry have been especially designed by JVL to provide a self-contained, integrated unit in which the driver and controller are mounted behind the motor in a sealed housing.

System intelligence is thereby decentralized by off-loading control functions to the device level. This makes the MAC motor well suited for distributed control architectures which are prevalent in factory automation processes today.

The MAC motor is available in 5 models: 50, 95 ,140W and 400 and 750W. Motor parameters are set-up via an RS232 port using Windows software MacTalk.

http://www.jvlusa.com

<a

Lower moment of inertia means higher dynamic properties for the system. In combination with the ACOPOS drive system, the 8LSA series servo motors offer high performance dynamics, precision and dependability.

<img

Both variants are also available as multi-turn encoders. This means that inconvenient homing procedures and additional sensors are no longer necessary. The absolute encoder functions without a battery and is therefore absolutely maintenance free. The result is a highly dependable encoder that uses permanent-magnet-excited servo motors in which the only parts subject to wear are the bearings. Therefore, dimensioning of the bear-ings plays a decisive role in the reliability and longevity of the motors. The bearings in the 8LSA servo motors are sufficiently dimensioned and filled with high quality synthetic lubricant. For unusually high demands, such as those that occur in belt drives, the motors are also available with reinforced bearings to withstand high radial forces.

<img

A linear temperature sensor is located in the motor winding. This sends the temperature, measured to the degree, to the higher-level inverter. A second temperature model integrated in the inverter calcu-lates a virtual motor temperature from the process data. This combination of data ensures all around protection of the motor winding.

All relevant mechanical and electrical information and data is stored in the encoder used for the 8LSA servo motors. This means that the user doesn’t have to make any settings on the servo drive in the field. As soon as the encoder is connected to the servo drive and the power is applied to the electronics, the motor is automatically identified. The motor sends its rated parameters and limit parameters to the servo drive. The drive then automatically determines the current limits and current control parameters required for optimal control of the motor. This function also saves a considerable amount of work when commissioning the motor.

All B&R servo motors were designed for international use and, in addition to the obligatory CE conformity, also contain the corresponding UL certification.

<a
