3-in-1 Motion Controller Combines EtherNet/IP and Rugged IP67 Rating

September 10, 2013 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

Advanced Micro Controls Inc. (AMCI), adds IP67 protection and rugged M12 connectors to their 3-in-1 integrated motion control package, providing exceptional durability. AMCI’s SMD23E incorporates a stepper motor, drive, and controller; simplifying installation and reducing cabling. This compact, low-cost, out-of-the-box motion control solution communicates with the host controller (PLC or PAC) via EtherNet/IP or Modbus-TCP, and is easily programmed through the controller’s software. The SMD23E’s innovative product design makes it a perfect solution for new installations or controls upgrades.

Stepper Motor/Drive/Controller Features:

  • 3-in-1 Integration: Stepper Motor + Drive + Controller
  • Incorporates EtherNet/IP & Modbus TCP interface
  • Programs directly through host controller’s software
  • High-torque NEMA frame size 23 stepper motor
  • Powerful, 3.4 amp, DC-powered microstepping drive
  • Compact design simplifies installation & reduces cabling
  • Optional encoder for move verification
  • ODVA conformance tested
  • Optional M12 connectors
  • Optional IP50 or IP67 protection

The new M12 connector version eliminates the vulnerability associated with RJ45 style connectors in industrial environments where cable flex and contaminants are a persistent issue. The rugged M12 connector option provides the SMD23E with a standard IP50 rating, plus an optional IP67 rating for superior protection against wash down environments such as food & beverage, industrial rinses, and other harsh conditions.

These cost-effective, integrated motion packages are ODVA conformance tested and interface with many PLCs including those from Rockwell Automation, Omron, and Schneider. “The PLC integration provides flexibility that simplifies machine change over and reduces set up time.”, explains Matt Tellier – AMCI Product Manager, Motion Control. All programming is performed by the same software used to configure the PLC/PAC, eliminating the need to learn any new software or programming language.

The SMD23E makes motion control affordable for a wide range of applications. We see many applications where a manual adjustment, or a pneumatic cylinder would have been selected; however it can now be implemented simply, and in a cost effective manner with the SMD23E, said Matt Tellier

The SMD23E provides an unsurpassed speed range with excellent high torque stepper motion control, and delivers exceptional performance across a range of applications. Examples of such applications include conveyors, bottle capping, feeders, cut-to-length, package sorting, pick and place, and form, fill and seal.
