Doosan’s VMC offers speed, power

August 9, 2011 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

Doosan (www.doosan.com) has introduced the VC430 VMC which comes with a 25 hp motor that can produce up to 12,000 rpm at the spindle as well as 123.6 ft. lbs. of torque. It can cut hard materials to produce mirror finishes with tenth precision.

Its 180-degree rotating pallet table remains stationary during operation to allow the workpieces to be placed on one side of the VMC, while parts are machined on the other side. Every pallet’s side measures 28 inches x 18.7 inches with a load capacity of 660 lbs. Meanwhile, table indexing time, including unclamp and clamp, stands at five seconds.

The spindle is directly mounted to the Fanuc spindle motor for reduced vibration and rapid acceleration/deceleration during high speed operation. The tools are contained in a double-arm, 40-station magazine with tool-to-tool times of 1.3 seconds. The bi-directional magazine of ATC automatically chooses the shortest path to reduce out-of-cut times. To increase precision, rigidity and tool life, the device features a dual-contact tool-mounting system that offers direct contact between the toolholder flange face and machine spindle face.

The VMC has been designed with a single-piece of heavily ribbed Meehanite casting, which enables it to withstand the forces and heat related with heavy cutting conditions. The design also gives the VMC a uniform load to the ballscrews, guideways and motors. High speed servomotors and linear-motion guideways allow high rapid-axis movements, featuring traverses measuring 1,259 ipm along the Z axis and 1,574 ipm on the X and Y axes.

A 66-gallon coolant tank has been isolated from the machine bed to prevent potential thermal distortion and heat transfer. Featuring flood cooling, the VMC also offers optional coolant chiller and through-the-spindle cooling. Automatic lubrication to all ballscrews and guideways is provided by piston distributors that measures the lubricant volume.
