High-speed precision large-bore ring motor from ThinGap

November 7, 2017 By Miles Budimir Leave a Comment

ThinGap has developed a large-bore compact ring motor optimized for precision and high-speed applications. ThinGap’s brushless frameless PM motor model TGO77 has an outside diameter of 77 mm (3.03 in.), 59 mm (2.32 in.) inside diameter, and 18 mm (0.709 in.) overall height. Continuous torque is approaching 0.2 Nm at speeds up to 30,000 rpm.

Vibration free, high-speed operation is facilitated by the patented, composite air-core winding which features a sinusoidal winding with less the 1% THD. Because there is no iron in the stator, there is zero cogging, zero iron losses, and zero radial forces between the stator and rotor.

Applications benefitting from the large through-bore and high-speed capability include LIDAR, scanning, and beam steering systems. Other applications, taking advantage of the precision torque, are air bearings, optical actuators, grinding, and polishing systems. Low TML materials are available for vacuum and space rated applications such as wafer processing and metrology equipment and satellite reaction wheels.

Adjustable windings are available that cover common bus voltages and speed requirements, as are integrated Hall devices and encoders.
