More than one million MDrive integrated motors sold

November 21, 2019 By Lisa Eitel Leave a Comment

More than 1 million MDrive integrated motors have sold since 2001 when they revolutionized motion system design by replacing multiple separate components with one compact all-in-one motor and electronics package. MDrive products pioneered the marriage of motor and electronic components all in one compact package, leading to the birth of today’s motion industry staple — integrated motors.

Integrated motors can simplify motion system design. Their all-in-one design of motor and electronics has vast advantages in today’s fast-paced industrial environment.

“With an integrated motion solution, when one mount the motor you’ve also mounted the electronics which are prewired onto the motor,” says Russ Gibas, Manager of the R&D group that developed MDrive. “With the addition of power, engineers can basically plug in and go.”

Since its initial launch almost 20 years ago, the MDrive integrated motor family has moved stepper motion control technology to a new level, increasing accuracy while providing additional benefits in a compact package. What began with reducing the electronics package size to fit onto a stepper motor using surface-mount technology and application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), has expanded to include features previously unavailable on stepper motors.

The latest MDrive products offer closed-loop performance, velocity control, energy savings, and a range of standardized communication choices including EthernetTCP/IP and CANopen. Numerous options and accessories are also available including absolute encoder, captive shaft electric cylinder, gearboxes and more.

With all-in-one integrated motion control solutions such as MDrive products, a machine’s complexity, size & cost can be greatly reduced. What in the 1970s was a phone-booth-sized rack mount enclosure containing a manually programmed drive, has evolved to a complete programmable motion control system integrated onto a motor.

MDrive products are assembled in a U.S. factory certified ISO9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015: motion.schneider-electric.com/dloads/certificationssustainability.
