MPC delivers customized urethane products for ATMs, currency and document handling machines

May 19, 2016 By Lisa Eitel Leave a Comment

Mearthane Products Corp. (MPC) is a developer and manufacturer of customized components — urethane products — based on specially formulated thermoset polyurethanes for use in a wide range of applications and industries. MPC’s customer base includes major global OEMs across a broad array of demanding market segments.

MPC’s specialty is expertise in developing urethane-based materials to enhance specific properties like hardness, wear resistance, and especially electrical conductivity and electrostatic dissipation.

Engineered urethane solutions for ATMs, currency and document handling machines

One fast growing application involves the critical belts, wheels and rollers found inside ATMs, check processing and currency handling machines in banking, as well as other currency and document handling machines used for a wide range of ticketing-payment kiosks and metering machines.

Related: What is COF or coefficient of friction? What is conductivity and electrostatic dissipation?

High-performance thermoset urethane is an ideal material for these applications, with clear advantages over rubber and silicone for components such as rollers, wheels, belts and pads. MPC is unique in its ability to custom formulate urethanes in both solids and microcellular foams, with a wide range of hardness, densities and many other properties.

High speed and high-volume currency-document handling and transport machines require precise parts movement and reliable paper capture at high speeds and volumes.

These machines must retain these capabilities under changing climate conditions since many of these machines are located outside, subject to changing temperatures and humidity conditions. They must perform reliably and continuously over long periods of time, as costs associated with downtime, maintenance and customer disappointment can be very high.

These environmental conditions, as well as the nature and cleanliness of the currency-documents, can affect electrostatic levels and friction on the paper handling parts and lead to disruptive paper jams and multiple feeds, forcing the machines to be taken out of service for costly emergency maintenance. Since operational reliability and durability is essential to these machines’ functions, ATM machine manufacturers and replacement part suppliers look to MPC for providing highly engineered urethane parts that will provide consistent electrical conductivity and coefficient of friction (COF) levels.

MPC’s extensive experience delivers superior parts for currency and document-handling machines

For over 50 years MPC has been delivering advanced urethane formulations for a broad range of customers, including major ATM and other currency and document handling machine OEMs. Semi-conductive urethanes for paper handling and transport tasks provide the best balance of precision static control, COF, abrasion resistance and toughness to ensure long-lasting, jam-free performance.

For the ATM manufacturer and service provider, benefits include increased equipment accuracy and precision, reduced downtime and less service needs, to include parts replacement, and enhanced customer satisfaction.

MPC’s ability to provide customizable levels of electrical conductivity, hardness, compressibility and COF greatly increases equipment reliability and performance and eliminates the need for overly tight tolerances in design.

Founded in 1965 as Mearthane Products Corp. (MPC) and located in Cranston, RI, today’s MPC is a specialty developer and manufacturer of customized polyurethane product solutions featuring variable conductivity, mechanical and environmental properties to suit a wide range of applications. Over the years the company’s polymer chemists have earned many product patents and maintain a robust R&D effort focused on developing specialized product formulations for precise customer needs.
