Reli-a-Flex Shaft Couplings offers long life, low kinematic error

August 28, 2012 By Stacy Combest Leave a Comment

Reliance Mechatronics launched a flexible shaft coupling that offers high torsional stiffness, low bearing load, long service life and low kinematic error.

The Reli-a-Flex coupling achieves high torsional stiffness by placing the beams radially around the coupling. Unlike other coupling with spiral pattern beams, the radial beams support the drive loads in compression. The center piece is also much better supported by radial beams, enabling the coupling to deliver higher speeds.

Meanwhile, the low theoretical kinematic error is achieved by using a solid center piece and two sets of slits. The second set of slits offers an opposite and equal angle that allows the coupling to cater to angular and parallel offsets.

The innovative double slit pattern of the Reli-a-Flex coupling helps reduce torque fluctuations by smoothing the torque’s transition from slit to slit during rotation, introducing negligible radial and axial bearing loads that are vital for optimizing accuracy and bearing life.

Outperforming other one piece coupling, the Reli-a-Flex coupling delivers predictable performance as it has been tested to 50,000,000 fatigue cycles at its rated torque and a maximum offset of 80 percent.

The Reli-a-Flex coupling offers 12 times less transmission error, 16 times greater torsional stiffness and 12 times less bearing load as compared to couplings with spiral beam. Together with unrivalled reliability, these features make Reli-a-Flex coupling ideally suited for accurate measuring as well as for responsive precision motion control, both for steppers and servos.
