Renesas introduces fastest embedded flash microcontroller

April 28, 2010 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

Renesas Technology Europe (www.renesas.eu) is proud to announce the release of the new SH7216 series of 32-bit on-chip flash memory microcontrollers. It is the latest addition to the powerful 32-bit SuperH RISC family.

The target market of the new SH7216 is industrial applications, including general-purpose networking, air conditioning, building automation, factory automation equipment, and AC servos. The SH7216 series consists of 72 devices giving variations in package type, on-chip memory capacity and whether or not FPU (“floating point processing unit”) and/or Ethernet functions are included. SH7216 features 200 MHz operating frequency, making it the fastest embedded flash microcontroller in the industry. Also, it includes an extensive set of built-in communication and peripherals interfaces.

The new SH7216 is powered by 32-bit SH-2A superscalar core. Also, selected devices include 400MFLOPS double and single precision floating point units. The device can achieve up to 400DMIPS with the superscalar core that executes two instructions simultaneously.

The new device includes the improved super-fast MONOS (“Metal Oxide Nitride Oxide Silicon”) embedded Flash. The MONOS enables a full deterministic zero-wait operation with 10 NS access time. The CPU clock runs at 200 MHz and it is not delayed by flash access, having “excellent” performance with cache misses or no wait states.

This microcontroller family features a diverse set of interfaces such as USB 2.0, CAN, and Ethernet. These features remove the need for external communication controllers in applications including office automation equipment and many types of industrial communication applications. Also, these give the SH7216 a wider appeal for general purpose connectivity applications.

The SH7216 has two advanced motor control timer units (“MTU2 and MTU2S”), which enable multi-axis servo control in high precision and can control two motors simultaneously. They include two 12-bit A/D CONVERTERs, which can do conversions in as little as 1 µs. The combination of A/D converter and timer makes the SH7216 ideal for controlling BLAC/BLDC motors using advanced control techniques.

Moreover, this microcontroller gives a wide range of other peripheral functions such as DMAC and data flash for non-volatile data transfer and data storage controller to reduce the CPU load. Its data flash memory integrates background operation (“BGO”) functionality, which enables data to be written while a program is executing at the same time. With this, the CPU is not affected by this process – making ideal for saving the cost and backup of an external EEPROM.
