Sunnen Products Co. (www.sunnen.com) is proud to introduce its new SV-1000 Series vertical CNC honing machine that is designed for outdoor power equipment manufacturers aiming to enhance the power output and durability of small two-stroke engines and meet the 2011 EPA standards.
The manual or auto-loaded honing machine uses TC superabrasive tools, which are custom designed for blind and ported cylinder bores and produces cylinders with micron-accurate size, exact surface and geometry to improve engine durability, power output and combustion efficiency.
The SV-1000, which is designed for part diameters from 3mm to 65mm, is a modular system that can mount multiple spindles to manage finishing and roughing operations. The single-spindle SV-1000 module is intended for future automation with detachable side enclosure panels to make flow-through part processing easier. The module comes with a servo rotary table or fixed tooling plate along with a 12-position rotary air union to support fixture control. An industrial PC control guarantees easy support and reliability with commercially available replacement parts and software-based updates, while the cast-polymer base of the machine offers excellent vibration damping and structural rigidity.
The SV-1000’s fully automated versions can be specified with the linear part transfer or servo rotary table, up to four spindles, or integrated part handling systems. For unmanned cellular processing, the module can be fitted with integrated post-process air gaging to deliver closed-loop control of geometry and bore size, along with feedback control and SPC data. Size, taper and straightness feedback control can be achieved with post-process air gaging with 1–4 servo columns. The air-gage-equipped machine can provide automatic control of bore size to submicron accuracy when used along with Sunnen’s TC multi-stone mandrels.
The machine has two patent pending innovations – a sensing tool feed system that can minimize processing time by sensing how much and where to hone the bore, and a servo-controlled stroking drive which reacts smoothly to control-generated motion profiles. The new stroking drive delivers the highest level of consistency and flexibility in spindle reciprocation, allowing a new level of process optimization.
