Moog’s motion control solution minimizes energy consumption in hydraulic molding machines

November 18, 2010 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

Moog (www.moog.com) has introduced an all-new Moog Speed Controlled Pump System (SCP System) that provides a motion control solution to blow molding and injection molding machine builders. With this new motion control solution, energy consumption in hydraulic machines can be lowered by 30% or more than traditional approaches and reduce ultimately the total cost of ownership. The new integrated system is based upon three proven products from Moog.

The pump system also includes a Maximum Dynamic Brushless Servo Motor, a Modular Multi-axis Programmable Motion Control Servo drive (MSD) and a fixed displacement Radial Piston Pump (RKP). The system’s unique functionality is the ability to allow machine operators to change the speed of the pump and motor, thus controlling the fluid flow. The machine is more energy efficient and also provides easier setup for operators and optimized system performance.

The Speed Controlled Pump System’s primary advantage is the impressive energy savings that is not available with other hydraulic technology used in blow molding and injection molding machines. The SCP System’s overall energy efficiency is higher compared with the traditional hydraulic systems.

The SCP’s efficiency with a medium load is 20% to 30% higher than the conventional system. If a machine is in a standby mode or in running without load mode, energy consumption can be 90% less.

“We see significant potential for market penetration with the new system, as machine builders place more emphasis on total cost of ownership and energy savings as a design criterion,” said Sheriff El Henaoui, marketing manager (Europe) of Moog.

“Our calculations and tests show that the total cost of ownership will be lower than traditional hydraulic technologies and the payback period for the initial investment is also shorter for operators due to the impressive energy savings.”
