Baumer unveils HOG 86 redundant optical incremental encoders

March 9, 2012 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

Baumer (www.baumer.com) has announced the release of its HOG 86 series of redundant optical incremental encoders, which are ideal for applications requiring reliable motor/generator feedback as well as speed and position control.

The new encoders feature dies cast housing that offers C4 protection from corrosion. With IP66 rating, the encoders can withstand challenging conditions in heavy vehicle and reliably operate in ambient temperatures ranging between -40°C and +100°C.

Meanwhile, the encoder’s terminal box variant offers a separate compartment and encapsulated electronics that protect it against humidity and water even when its cover is opened for installation.

The encoder’s optional ceramic hybrid ball bearings offer up to 100,000 hours of service life, while its hollow shaft encoder’s bearings offer protection against inductive shaft currents. The HOG 86 encoder also comes with an optional integrated EMS (Enhanced Monitoring System) that monitors its functionality in the entire speed range. In the event of failure, the system outputs visual and digital LED warnings. For quick system reboots, the encoder can easily identified errors thanks to an easy and automatic remote failure analysis as well as a simplified encoder analysis.

The new range of encoders provide over 20 flexible and sophisticated connection options for easier installation, which includes M23 connector, terminal box, cable as well as fiber optic versions. To facilitate installation, the terminal box can be rotated up to 180°, while its optional torque arm and flexible mounting permits multiple locations.
