Ventura, Cal. – ThinGap announces the latest member of its 14-inch Ring Motor series, the 14050. Developed under contract to DARPA using ThinGap patented technology, the 14050 produces up to 60kW. It features smooth torque and speed, because of ThinGap’s proprietary design which produces no rotor-to-stator magnetic forces, no cogging, no eddy current losses and no hysteresis. A 13-4 PH stainless-steel rotor and magnets mounted inside the outer face of the ring allows for up to 10,000 rpm operation.
In a ThinGap motor, the stator is formed of laminated, precision-etched copper sheet, resulting in a thin (0.15”) wall stator. This stator geometry, the airflow generated by the rotor moving on both sides of the coil, and the lack of eddy current losses allow for excellent cooling. Also, the ThinGap motor will not saturate magnetically, which leads to higher torque.
