Fully integrated servo controller IC from Trinamic aids ventilator design

May 12, 2020 By Miles Budimir Leave a Comment

Trinamic Motion Control has debuted the TMC4671-LA, the world’s first fully integrated servo controller IC with field-oriented control for BLDC/PMSM, 2-phase stepper motors, dc motors, and voice coils.

Using input from market leaders in e-mobility, robotics, lab automation, and pump and blower design, Trinamic has fully optimized the TMC4671-LA by incorporating all required motor control functions into a single compact IC. The TMC4671-LA offloads critical real-time tasks from the processor and software by handling all motor control functions in a single, compact, servo controller IC.

“We collaborated with market leaders to understand their challenges when we built the TMC4671-ES, our initial version of this dedicated servo controller IC, and used insights from extensive testing to create this highly improved version,” said Michael Randt, Founder and CEO of Trinamic.“ The TMC4671-LA allows our customer to build a servo drive in a day, while offering low ownership cost and best-in-class performance.”

Because all time-critical calculations are contained in the hardware, optimizing dynamic server control requires only a few lines of code, resulting in much shorter development times. The TMC4671-LA also integrates ADCs, position sensor interfaces, and position interpolators to further simplify the design process.

Trinamic has also introduced the open-source TMC4671+TMC6100-BOB, a development board that combines the dedicated TMC4671-LA servo controller IC and universal high-voltage gate-driver. Designed for rapid prototyping of applications, the TMC4671+TMC6100-BOB allows engineers to simultaneously check how the motor performs and tune the application.

Trinamic open source ventilator
In response to the medical equipment needs of the COVID-19 outbreak, Trinamic has developed the Trinamic Open-Source Ventilator (TOSV). The TOSV uses a module based on the TMC4671-LA and TMC4671-Eval-Kit. The small, integrated-module PCB handles all of the driver functions and the interface to the pressure sensors. A single-board computer such as a Raspberry Pi can be used to provide the control, user interface, and safety functions.

The TMC4671-LA is available now through Trinamic’s sales partners. Fully integrated into Trinamic’s development environment, the TMC4671-Eval-Kit can be combined with a 2A/24V power stage, a 10A/70V power stage or TMC6100-Eval board for complete evaluation of the fully functional servo controller IC. The TMC4671-BOB and TMC4671+TMC6100-BOB are available as well to speed up the design-in process.

Features and benefits:

  • Servo controller with field-oriented control (FOC)
  • 3-phase PMSM/BLDC, 2-phase stepper motors, and single-phase DC motors
