Intrinsically Safe (IS) Ethernet equipment suitable for hazardous areas

July 21, 2011 By Motion Control Tips Editor Leave a Comment

MTL Instruments (www.mtl-inst.com) has unveiled a cost-effective Intrinsically Safe (IS) Ethernet device that can be easily installed and maintained in hazardous environments. IS Ethernet equipment’s 9460-ET Series is comprised of IECEx certified components that includes IS Ethernet Switch, IS Copper to Fiber Converter, IS Serial – Ethernet Gateway, IS Ethernet Isolator and IS Wireless AP/Bridge.

Various methods have been utilized in process automation to communicate and power with end devices, such as 4-20mA, which is a variety of numerous Fieldbus standard, serial communications, including RS422, RS485 and RS232, as well as telephony, video and Ethernet.

Ethernet presents the ideal solution for applications requiring high bandwidth since it offers open connectivity. Moreover, it can also be combined with Linking Devices and Ethernet Remote I/O to connect to Fieldbus systems and low bandwidth 4-20mA.

Ethernet, however, is rarely used in hazardous environments due to its high cost of installation and the limitations related to its maintenance.

Thus, MTL Instrument’s 9460-ET Series offers Intrinsically Safe (IS) Ethernet equipment that is cost-effective and easy to maintain, even in hazardous environments.

Its intrinsically safe hazardous area certification allows the components to be positioned in a Division 1, or Zone 1 hazardous area. Offering connectivity to Zone 0, the associated apparatus certification of the 9491-PS IS power supply and the 9468-ET IS Ethernet isolator enable the equipment to be positioned in a Zone 2 hazardous environment, while connecting to intrinsically safe equipment in a Division 1      , or Zone 1 or 0 hazardous area.
