Maximize Design Flexibility and Machine Performance with Kollmorgen

April 17, 2014 By Jennifer Calhoon Leave a Comment

Kollmorgen will be exhibiting its family of motion control solutions for packaging machine builders at Interpack 2014, located in Dusseldorf, Germany, from May 8-14, 2014 in the Motion Control and Automation Hall 8a, Stand C 08. Kollmorgen will highlight its new IP69-K rated stainless steel AKMH™ Servomotor, specifically designed to address the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and provide long-life and trouble-free operation, even with daily exposure to chemicals and high pressure washdown, The company will also highlight its AKD-N distributed servo drive solution that significantly reduces cabinet space and cabling hassle, simplifying machine design, set-up and operation.

AKMH Servomotor – Hygienic Design

“The AKD-N and AKMH solutions can be applied together or separately with other Kollmorgen technologies to take any machine to the next level. AKMH servomotors work with the entire AKD drive platform and AKD-N works with the entire Kollmorgen motor platform, so machine builders can benefit from an exact-fit solution for their specific application needs. These two products are particularly beneficial for packaging machines and will make a new class of simpler and more hygienic machinery,” says Tom England, Kollmorgen VP Market Development.

Kollmorgen’s AKMH servomotors are specifically designed to reduce the risk of food recall, reduce cleaning time and increase reliability in harsh washdown environments. They feature a hygienic housing design that meets EHEDG, NSF, BISSC and 3A guidelines. The smooth surface design, and use of highly corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel, decreases the risk of product recalls by reducing the possibility of bacteria growth. The AKMH requires no additional protection and can be sanitized without bagging, covering, or removing it from the machine. Cleaning time is reduced due to single cable technology and no exposed hardware. Kollmorgen is so confident in the quality and performance that the company backs it with a two year warranty against water ingress -the best warranty in the industry.

AKD-C/N Family

Kollmorgen’s AKD-N distributed servo drive solution provides machine builders with the flexibility to utilize any Kollmorgen motor technology, while still implementing a system that decentralizes the drives into the machine chassis. Because the AKD-N is able to connect to all types of Kollmorgen motor technologies, the solution enables machine designer’s to select motors that are perfectly optimized for environment and load requirements. This modular approach also optimizes the thermal properties of the drives and the cabinet, and by being mounted directly on the machine, distributed AKD-N servo drives significantly reduce cabinet volumes and cabling effort – in fact in certain applications, savings of over 80% can be achieved.

Because AKD-N distributed servo technology can be used alongside any servo drive in the AKD platform, AKD-N creates a new high water mark for ease of use in the building process for OEM’s and maintainability in the field for end-users. Drives are quickly and easily installed by making three screw lock connections. Traditional panel mount systems involve cable chasing, panel wiring, tagging, and crimping – AKD-N eliminates these requirements.
