Nanotec expands AS5918 series stepper motors

May 10, 2012 By Motion Control Tips Editor 1 Comment

Nanotec Electronic, U.S. Inc. (en.nanotec.com) has expanded its AS5918 series with the addition of two new IP-rated stepper motors that feature integrated, magnetic 24V encoder and an optional brake, the AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B.

The company’s entire AS motor range features a compact design while delivering a high positioning reliability even in harsh environments. The magnetic 24V encoder serves as the distinguishing feature of the AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B models.

Specifically developed by the company for integration into IP-protected motors, the magnetic encoders yield 1024 increments per revolution and are less sensitive to dust, vibrations, humidity and dirt. The 24V connection at the encoder makes the stepper motors ideally suited for direct control through a PLC or a higher-level control system.

In order to prevent damage to property or persons, the optional brake, which offers 1Nm of holding torque, is commonly used where vertical loads have to be held in place during an emergency stop or a power failure. This applies to safety-critical and Z-axes applications.

The AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B stepper motors feature a holding torque of 1.98 Nm, making them perfect substitute to servomotors with gearboxes in Torque Mode as well as Closed Loop at low speeds. This is attributed to their compact design and greater energy efficiency in mechanical engineering devices or even in other systems that demand precise positioning and used in hazardous environments.

Featuring M8 and M12 connections, the stepper motors provides a high degree of electromagnetic compatibility. The AS5918-EMN24 and AS5918-EMN24B motors also have a flange dimension of 56 mm (NEMA 23), making them compatible with all Nanotec stepper motors and suitable for use in mixed environments.
