SpinDrive launches Magma X100 magnetic bearing controller

SpinDrive, a Finnish company that develops active magnetic bearing systems for industrial machinery, is introducing the Magma X100, a magnetic bearing controller platform for lower-power, ultra-high-speed applications up to 150 kW. The Magma X100 is scheduled to be unveiled at Turbo Expo 2026 in Milan. The platform is designed to provide active magnetic bearing performance for lower-power applications at a cost comparable to conventional high-speed bearing systems.

The new platform expands SpinDrive’s product range into applications such as mobile rotating machinery, semiconductor manufacturing tools, CNC machines, heat pumps and other high-speed rotating equipment that require oil-free operation.

Founded in 2015, SpinDrive has deployed its Magma X800 platform in turbo blowers, flywheels, turbo expanders and other rotating machinery at industrial sites in Europe, the United States and Asia. The Magma X100 applies the company’s active magnetic bearing technology to a lower-power platform aimed at higher-volume applications. The X100 uses a power electronics platform intended to reduce the cost of active magnetic bearings relative to other high-speed bearing options.

The Magma X100 was developed in part with support from the European Innovation Council Accelerator program, which provides funding and business support for technology companies. The program supported development of friction-free, oil-free bearing technology for industrial applications.

Unlike conventional mechanical bearings, active magnetic bearings support rotating components without physical contact. This reduces friction-related wear, eliminates the need for lubricants, enables continuous condition monitoring and supports higher rotational speeds. These features can help reduce energy use as well as operating and maintenance requirements, while also addressing contamination concerns associated with oil-based systems.

The lower cost, smaller form factor and simplified integration of the Magma X100 are intended to support broader use of active magnetic bearing technology in applications where previous systems have been considered too costly or complex.

The launch follows SpinDrive’s recently announced partnership with WEG, an electric motor manufacturer, at Hannover Messe 2026. The collaboration combines its active magnetic bearing systems and IoT monitoring with WEG’s electric motor portfolio. The Magma X100 is intended to support a broader range of oil-free, lower-maintenance bearing applications through that partnership.

SpinDrive is focused on expanding its position in magnetic bearing systems for high-speed rotating equipment. Its technology is intended to improve efficiency, eliminate fossil-based lubricants from some industrial processes and extend equipment life through contact-free operation.

Turbo Expo 2026 will take place in Milan, Italy, from June 16-18. SpinDrive will exhibit at stand B55. COO Nikita Uzhegov will discuss the technology and application areas for active magnetic bearings during a demonstration of the new controller at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17.
